Could This 5.4-Megapixel, 0.61-inch MicroOLED Replace Optical Viewfinders? [Displays]

For purist photographers, there is no alternative to the optical viewfinder. Current LED screens are, by comparison, like looking though the bottom of a bottle. But could this tiny, high-res display change that? More »

Will Listening to Mozart Really Make You Smarter? [Science]

Yes, but no more than listening to Justin Bieber. The misconception that there's something unique about Mozart's ability to increase brainpower began in 1993, with a paper in Nature. Neurobiologists Gordon Shaw, Frances Rauscher and Katherine Ky of the University of California at Irvine found that students who listened to 10 minutes of a Mozart sonata demonstrated a temporary increase in spatial-temporal reasoning, as measured by an IQ test. The public seized on the romantic idea that listening to Mozart would make them smarter, and Don Campbell, a teacher and music educator from Texas, capitalized on the notion with an international bestseller, The Mozart Effect. Gingrich says he's in 'til GOP convention (AP)

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. ? On the weekend before the pivotal Florida primary, Newt Gingrich vowed Saturday to stay in the race for the Republican presidential nomination until the national convention this summer even if he loses Tuesday's vote. Front-runner Mitt Romney poured on the criticism of his rival in television ads airing across the state.

Gingrich's pledge, followed several hours later by an endorsement from campaign dropout Herman Cain, raised the prospect of an extended struggle inside the party as Republicans work to defeat President Barack Obama in the fall. "You just had two national polls that show me ahead," he said. "Why don't you ask Gov. Romney what he will do if he loses" in Florida.

The former Massachusetts governor countered a few hours later while in Panama City. "I think we are going to win here, I sure hope so," he said.

As the two rivals made their appeals to Hispanic, Jewish and tea party voters, veterans of the armed forces and others, all known indicators pointed to a good day for Romney in the primary.

He and his allies held a 3-1 advantage in money spent on television advertising in the race's final days. Robust early vote and absentee ballot totals followed a pre-primary turnout operation by his campaign. Even the schedules the two men kept underscored the shape of the race ? moderate for Romney, heavy for Gingrich.

Campaigning like a front-runner, Romney made few references to Gingrich. Instead, he criticized Obama's plans to cut the size of the armed forces. "He's detached from reality," the former Massachusetts governor said.

"The foreign policy of `pretty please' is not working terribly well," he added. Romney said he wants to add 100,000 troops, not cut them.

If his personal rhetoric was directed Obama's way, the television commercials were trained on Gingrich, whose victory in last Saturday's South Carolina primary upended the race for the nomination. A new ad released as the weekend began is devoted to the day in 1997 when Gingrich received an ethics reprimand from the House while serving as speaker and was ordered to pay a $300,000 fine.

Nearly the entire 30-second ad consists of NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw's nationally broadcast description of the events on the evening news. "By an overwhelming vote, they found him guilty of ethics violations; they charged him a very large financial penalty, and they raised ? several of them ? raised serious questions about his future effectiveness," Brokaw said that night, and now again on televisions across Florida.

Both NBC and the former newsman registered objections. The network called on the campaign to stop using the footage and Brokaw said in a statement, "I do not want my role as a journalist compromised for political gain by any campaign."

A Romney adviser, Eric Fehrnstrom, said the campaign wasn't likely to stop running the ad. "We believe it falls within fair use," he said. "We didn't take the entire broadcast; we just took the first 30 seconds."

Whatever its impact, the ad represented part of a barrage that Gingrich could not match.

A second Romney ad said Gingrich had "cashed in" as a Washington insider while the housing crisis was hitting Florida particularly hard.

Figures made available to The Associated Press showed Romney was spending $2.8 million to air television commercials in the final week of the Florida campaign. In addition, a group supporting him, Restore Our Future, was spending $4 million more, for a combined total of $6.8 million.

By contrast, Gingrich was spending about $700,000, and Winning Our Future, a group backing him, an additional $1.5 million. That was about one-third the amount for the pro-Romney tandem.

Officials said the total of absentee and early vote cast approached 500,000, about 200,000 of them before Gingrich won in South Carolina last weekend.

Cain's endorsement came at a GOP dinner in West Palm Beach. The business executive led briefly in the polls last fall, then cratered and dropped out of the race after he was accused of sexual harassment and marital infidelity.

In supporting the former speaker, he followed an example set by Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who bestowed his endorsement a few days before the South Carolina primary.

Gingrich seemed in good humor during the day, despite the obstacles in his way. He joked with reporters that they had missed an example of his grandiosity ? a charge that one rival, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, had used in a recent debate ? when they didn't see him hold a golf trophy on display at the PGA Library.

Gingrich also turned aside one opportunity to criticize Romney, answering a question by saying, `I want to talk about defeating Obama."

But his tone seemed to change after he said he wasn't happy with his performances in a pair of debates during the week, and was asked to explain.

"You cannot debate somebody who is dishonest. You just can't," he said, referring to Romney.

Referring to one answer the former Massachusetts governor had given, Gingrich said it was not true that Romney had always voted for a Republican when one was on the ballot.

"That in fact he could have voted for George H.W. Bush or Pat Buchanan the same day and he chose the Democratic primary, he voted Paul Tsongas, the most liberal candidate. The same year he gave money to three Democrats for Congress," he added, referring to the 1992 campaign.

"Now there's no practical way in a civil debate to deal with somebody who is that willing to say something that is just totally dishonest."

Romney poked fun at Gingrich's debate performances.

"This last one Speaker Gingrich said he didn't do so well because the audience was so loud. The one before he said he didn't do so well because the audience was too quiet. This is like Goldilocks, you know, you've got to have it just right.

"When I debate the president, I'm not going to worry about the audience, I'm going to make sure that we take down Barack Obama and take back the White House."

The two other contenders, Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul, have conceded Florida and did not campaign in the state during the day.

Insects top list of newly discovered species

An annual inventory of newly discovered species lists more than 19,000 ?? half of them insects. A total of 9,738 insect species were first identified in 2009, the most recent year of data compilation. And that's not even counting spiders.

The 2011 State of Observed Species report, released Jan. 18 by the International Institute for Species Exploration at Arizona State University, categorized 19,232 species that became known to science during the 2009 calendar year.

"As the number of species increases, so, too, does our understanding of the biosphere," said Arizona State entomologist Quentin Wheeler, a founding director of the institute. The report, the institute's fourth, showed a 5.6 percent increase from the previous year in the number of newly discovered species.

    4. Humans' taste for dolphins, manatees on rise

After insects, the largest group of new living species was vascular plants, totaling 2,184. Newly discovered arachnids, a group that includes spiders and mites, numbered 1,487.

Forty-one of the listed species were mammals, and seven were birds. There were also 1,360 newly identified species of fungi and 1,107 new microbes.

Species IDs need improvement
In fact, the number of new living species discovered in 2009 was about twice as many as were known in the lifetime of Carolus Linnaeus, the Swedish botanist who initiated the modern system of plant and animal classification more than 250 years ago.

"The cumulative knowledge of species since 1758, when Linnaeus was alive, is nearly 2 million, but much remains to be done," Wheeler said. "A reasonable guess is that 10 million additional plant and animal species await discovery by scientists and amateur species explorers."

The report notes there is a growing need for improved approaches regarding species exploration and the recognition of new species. An "obvious lesson" learned during the compilation of the report's data was that the registration of all the aspects that contribute to the identification and naming of a new species, including its description, must be mandatory going forward, Wheeler said.

"In the animal world, it takes about two years to mine the international literature for evidence of newly named species," Wheeler explained. "The current lack of registration requirements simply compounds the problem of an already massive backlog."

Discovery and conservation
The researchers stressed that species discovery and identification play an important role in designing future wildlife conservation efforts.

"It is through knowledge of the unique attributes of species that we illuminate the origin and evolutionary history of life on our planet," Wheeler said. "As we find out where species live and how they interact, we increase our ability to understand the function of ecosystems and make effective, fact-based decisions regarding conservation."

In addition to the new report, the species institute is releasing a Retro State of Observed Species report, which reviews species discovered from 2000 to 2009. The Retro SOS shows that 176,311 species were discovered during that period.

Certainly possible, especially if he continues on to have several more good regular seasons.

It's funny, before the season started I was saying Cruz was going to pass Manningham on the depth chart and be a solid #2. He just needed to learn the playbook better and get some chemistry with Eli. Never in my wildest dreams did I think he would do this though.

Nicks and Cruz have been very dependable. They make the big gain circus catch plays, but they also make the short yardage, drive extending third down catches, and that's important.

Idea for a Super Bowl drinking game:
One shot for every time Michaels or Collinsworth says "elite".
One shot for every time Michaels or Collinsworth mentions Super Bowl XLII.

We'd all be dead by the five minute mark of the first quarter.

GMEN!

Hopefully Eli becomes the last Manning to ever win a game in Indy

Ready for same Brady beatdown v2.0. Neither team is better than they were in 2007 but Giants D-line is pretty close to edging out 07's IMO. Strahan, Tuck, Osi vs. Tuck, Osi, JPP?

It worked four years ago and its gonna work again!!

2 in 4! LETS GO!

For the 30 losers that aren't headed to the Super Bowl, what are some things on your offseason wish lists for your teams?

Broncos

In the draft, we need to add a penetrating interior lineman. Guys like Still from Penn State and Worthy from Michigan State should be on the board at pick #25. We also need a talented safety valve at tight end. Dwayne Allen from Clemson is arguably the best TE in this class, and should be there at 25 as well. Eddie Konz should be a dominant center in this league for years to come, and although we just recently drafted JD Walton, if you have the opportunity to significantly improve a position, you go for it. A guy like Kendall Wright at WR, David Wilson at RB, or Josh Norman at CB (fast riser at the Shrine Bowl) would be great second round picks.

As far as free agency, we need to try to add a backup QB that will challenge Tebow for playing time and therefore push him to get better. Not that Tebow won't try to improve, because he obviously will, but we need a viable option behind him in case he flops. Brady Quinn was not going to cut it this year. I'd like to see us add a veteran middle linebacker that can be a difference maker. Lofton will probably resign in Atlanta, but a guy that I'm banking we'll pursue is Dan Connor from Carolina. Fox drafted him, after all, and when Beason went down this year, he played very well. We could really use a veteran CB like Terrell Thomas (might want more money than the Giants are willing to give after the ACL injury), Brandon Carr, or Tracy Porter (nagged by injuries and fell victim to the emergence of Patrick Robinson). A dominant DE to play opposite Dumervil is probably a luxury at this point, given our other more gaping needs. Avril would be awesome, but he's in a great situation on that emerging D-line in Detroit and will probably re-up. If they don't see a DT prospect they like in the draft, then Jason Jones would be a terrific option. Probably the best available interior pass rusher this offseason. A one-cut running back like Ryan Grant or Michael Bush, along with McGahee, would give Fox the physical running game he's looking for.

The wish list is long, and we need to fill a lot of holes to compete. But a lot of these options are realistic, and I'm hoping Elway can have another solid draft and put together some quality free agents in this, his first normal offseason.

ESPN isn't even showing the Bradshaw "fumble". So much for it being a controversy this week.

I wasn't in here to see the reaction but I thought the forward progress ruling was accurate. Veron Davis did seem to step out of bounds well before the endzone for his 73 yard TD catch though.

The ball slightly touching the return man call was quite amazing though. I swore the refs were going to stay with the call on the field because even with the replays it was so close. Between that and the fumble in OT that return man should be on suicide watch. Poor guy, I hope he doesn't let it bother him long.

Krinkle, I like you dude, but you have to give it a rest. If the MVP was a "true value of a player to a team award", since Peyton Manning can't get it for being hurt (which honestly he should because holy crap is that team putrid without him), Eli Manning is the true MVP of the NFL this season.

This is his year. 5856 yards, 37 TDs - 17 INT. on a team that has a line that has shown up probably 1/3rd of the time, and can't run the ball to save their lives.

BG's post isn't even worth a comment. Beat a 15-1 team on the road, handily, obviously they had nothing to do with it. They're in the Super Bowl, and if he got his knee blown out in preseason they'd be lucky to be a 4 or 5 win team.

That being said, the 49ers D was pretty awesome today (see, BG, I give credit to the other team instead of saying the Giants line was the cause of the problem), and that was a sucky way for them to go out. I think we may have won eventually without it, barring a disasterous turnover, because Smith had a big time case of the yips from the end of the 4th on, but still...
