The Worlds First Underwater Horse Race Held
(PRWEB) November 22, 2005
The world record holding, Bay City Divers SCUBA Club was at it again yesterday, with the holding of the Worlds First Underwater Horse Race off St Leonard?s Pier on the Bellarine Peninsula. Following on from their Guinness World Record for Extreme Underwater Ironing earlier in the year, club members decided to find a new way to kick off the summer diving season.
?We have watched the spring racing carnival in Melbourne with great interest,? said Alan Igoe, Club Co-President. ?It seamed only natural to combine the fun of the races including fashions on the field competition and the traditional sweep, with our favorite underwater pass time.?
The event was held 4 meters below the waves in Port Phillip Bay and saw divers from all over the region compete in a series of underwater wooden hobby-horse races wearing full SCUBA equipment and in some cases full Jockey outfits. The Fashions on the Fields competition attracted several participants and the traditional sweep attracted interest from most spectators.
After a series of qualifying races, the final field consisted of four trusty thoroughbreds. The ?St Leonard?s Cup? was run over 20 meters and won by Jockey Andrew Newton by a nose.
Additional information and Photographs of the event are available by contacting Alan Igoe on the details below.
