Oil above $87 amid improving US consumer demand (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Oil prices hovered above $87 a barrel Tuesday in Asia amid signs of improving consumer demand in the U.S.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was up 22 cents to $87.49 at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose $1.90 to settle at $87.27 on Monday.

In London, Brent crude for October delivery was up 42 cents to $112.30 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Crude has jumped 16 percent from near $76 three weeks ago amid growing investor optimism the U.S. economy may not slip into recession in the second half.

On Monday, the Commerce Department said consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of the nation's economic activity, increased in July by the biggest amount in five months.

A rally in global stock markets also helped boost crude prices. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 2.2 percent Monday and most Asia stock markets gained Tuesday.

Some analysts are expect crude to head lower as slowing global economic growth pinches oil demand.

"We still look for weak global demand to win out over the longer term eventually forcing the oil market into fresh low territory," energy consultant Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report.

In other Nymex trading for October contracts, heating oil rose 0.8 cent to $3.03 per gallon and gasoline futures gained 0.6 cent to $2.78 per gallon. Natural gas for September delivery slid 1.5 cents to $3.82 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Finance minister to be Japan's next prime minister (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's ruling party elected Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda as its new chief Monday, paving the way for him to be the next prime minister and inherit the daunting task of recovering from the huge tsunami and nuclear crisis.

Noda, 54, is known as a fiscal conservative and has lately been battling a sluggish economy, bulging national debt and the yen's record surge, which hurts Japan's exporters by making their products more expensive overseas.

As prime minister ? Japan's sixth in five years ? he will have to broaden his scope to deal with the continuing reconstruction from the March 11 quake and tsunami along the northeastern coast and the 100,000 people who remain dislocated because of radiation leaking from a tsunami-damaged nuclear plant.

"Let us sweat together for the sake of the people," he said after the vote. "This is my heartfelt wish."

Noda replaces Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who resigned after nearly 15 months in office plagued by public discontent over political infighting and his administration's handling of the disasters.

Noda defeated Trade Minister Banri Kaieda ? who was backed by an influential behind-the-scenes party kingpin ? in a run-off election 215-177 among ruling party members of parliament after none of the initial five candidates won a majority in the first round. Noda will go on to become prime minister because the Democrats control the more powerful lower house of parliament.

After the vote, Noda said the three most pressing challenges facing the nations are recovering from the tsunami, bringing to a close the nuclear crisis and dealing with the strengthening of the yen and the deflationary pressure it has put on Japan's economy.

Noda came from behind to win the run-off, getting 102 votes in the first round to Kaieda's 143. The result could be seen as a slap against Ichizo Ozawa, a scandal-tainted party powerbroker who threw his support behind Kaieda.

Ozawa, a 69-year-old veteran who began in the long-ruling and now opposition Liberal Democratic Party, is known for savvily engineering elections, sending novices to parliament, as well as dooming candidates to defeat. His is embroiled in a political funding scandal but his presence has hung like a shadow over the party leadership campaign.

Noda is a staunch supporter of the Japan-U.S. security alliance, which he has called "essential for Japan's security and prosperity." And while praising China's economic development, he has cited concerns about their growing military strength.

As finance minister since June 2010, Noda has been contending with budgets and a strong yen, which hit a post-World War II high against the dollar earlier this month.

Noda must also deal with a divided parliament, which has increased gridlock, after the opposition won control of the upper house last summer.

Japan has been plagued by rapid turnover in political leadership that has undermined its ability to tackle serious problems. The past five prime ministers lasting about a year each; Kan lasted the longest at nearly 15 months.

Kaieda is the third Democratic leader since the party surged to a landslide victory two years ago, dumping the long-ruling conservatives, amid widespread hope for change.

Those hopes have been largely dashed amid public disappointment over scandals, persistent political infighting ? in parliament and within the ruling party ? and a perceived lack of decisive leadership.

Noda is not from an elite background like many Japanese politicians. He began honing his political skills at a postgraduate institute designed to groom a new generation of progressive leaders.

Before he took on a ministerial post, he was known for standing at train stations in his district in Chiba, just east of Tokyo, every morning to greet commuters personally.

How to use social media during Hurricane Irene

Facebook

By Suzanne Choney

Updated Saturday, 7 p.m. ET

You don't have to go too far from home ? or may not be able to?? to find out what you need to know about Hurricane Irene, or to connect with the people you care about. Facebook and Twitter have a lot of help to offer, as they have in previous disasters. Here are some handy starting points:

Facebook
? Check the state resources page with direct website links to emergency departments of the states affected by Irene, although bear in mind, as of late Friday, a few were missing. "Please post Maryland and New York as soon as you can!" wrote one person on the "wall." (Here are those two states' emergency websites: New York and Maryland.)

? The American Red Cross and Federal Emergency Management Agency also have their own Facebook pages.

? The federal Department of Homeland Security page, which includes information such as this: "Find a shelter: Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362. Relay this message via text to family & friends impacted that might have lost power."

? The Global Disaster Relief page is meant to be a "hub for preparedness, response and relief information," which will be continually updated, said a Facebook spokesman.

On Saturday, Facebook also added two new tabs on that page: "One is a Resource Center and the other is a 'Share Your Story' tab that lets people share how they've used Facebook to prepare, respond, provide relief," said a Facebook spokesman.

??Hurricane Irene Community page is a kind of blog-style newsfeed of storm-related news.

? The National Weather Service page for forecasts and hurricane tracking.

? The FBI, on its Facebook page, reminds folks "to beware of fraudulent e-mails and websites claiming to conduct charitable relief efforts. Disasters prompt individuals with criminal intent to solicit contributions purportedly for a charitable organization or a good cause," and suggests reading "Tips on Avoiding Fraudulent Charitable Contribution Schemes" to learn more about avoiding online fraud.

Facebook has also created a tip sheet for how to better use your personal settings before, during and after a disaster. Among the recommendations: After a disaster, let your friends and family know you're all right by going to the Red Cross' Safe and Well site.

From that site you can update your Facebook and Twitter status to let your loved ones and friends know that you are safe. Alert those in your social networking circles of your status. A quick post of ?I?m ok? or using the hashtag #imok will be sufficient.

Twitter
You can use the hashtag #irene to follow any tweets about the storm.?(Try not to confuse # and @???@irene is?not?a tropical cyclone, she's a person.)

Also check the always-changing "trending" list on Twitter's home page to see what new hashtags have cropped up that may be of help or of interest. Among those that were trending on Saturday, for example: #East Coast, #NYIrene and #IrenePets.

Twitter

Twitter's "Fast Follow" feature for phones.

Here are some recommended Twitter accounts to follow, as suggested by the short-messaging blog, which limits posts to 140 characters:

??@twc_hurricane: The Weather Channel?s hurricane central account shares the latest updates on Irene?s location.

? @NYCMayorsOffice: Official info for New Yorkers on evacuations, transportation and more.

? @FEMA and @CraigatFEMA: Preparation tips and the latest updates on Hurricane #Irene. FEMA also has a Twitter page here.

?? American Red Cross Twitter page; @RedCross

??The Humane Society of the United States is on Twitter, as well, with up-to-date info on pet and animal assistance.

Twitter also suggests a few text-message features you might want to put into place on your phone before Irene arrives, so that you can still get information if you wind up losing power or mobile Internet:

Fast Follow: Use this feature as "the quickest way to begin receiving updates from a Twitter source on your mobile device. You do not need to sign up for a Twitter account in order to receive updates directly to your mobile phone. For example, to follow FEMA (@fema), all you need to do is text ?follow fema? to 40404" in the United States. You can do the same with any Twitter account by sending the text message of "Follow (username)" to 40404. You can learn more about Fast Follow here.

Set SMS alerts: "From your computer, wherever you see a user on Twitter.com, you can hover over their name or avatar, and click on the phone icon that appears in the hovercard. Whenever they tweet, you'll get it as an SMS message on your phone."

You can learn more about Fast Follow and Set SMS Alerts here.

Both Twitter and Facebook are incredibly valuable during times like these; be sure to take advantage of what they have to offer.

"Wherever and whenever disaster strikes, we are reminded of the Internet?s critical role in connecting the world?s population," said a Facebook spokesman Friday. "Just as millions of people flocked to Facebook after recent earthquakes devastated Haiti and Japan and tornadoes ripped across the Midwest, people are once again using our platform to prepare for Hurricane Irene as it barrels toward the East Coast."

5 Ways To Trace Your Family History Without Leaving Home ...

ElyseRomano Saturday, August 27 2011 @ 09:10 AM Eastern Daylight Time Views: 30

Want to trace your family history, but don't know where to start?

In the case of genealogy, the best place to start is also the easiest: your home. Thanks to the innovations of the Internet, beginning to establish a family tree is as simple as logging online and taking advantage of the many resources available on the World Wide Web.

Here are 5 ways to to kick off the hunt for your ancestors without leaving home:

  1. Search obituaries. Most family trees begin in the present and work backwards, so the obituaries of your most recently deceased relatives are a good place to start researching your ancestry. Obituary notices contain invaluable information like date of birth and date of death, as well as place of burial and insight into the life of the deceased person. They may also lead you to living relatives who may be able to provide more information. Obituaries can be found using an obituary search engine, or using the archive of the local paper.
  2. Ask your relatives. With the modern conveniences of email, instant messaging, and Skype, it's easier than ever to stay in touch with even the most distant of kin. Interview your family members and gather all the information you can from those who know your family best. Creating a genealogy website or blog is a great way to get your family interested in the project, and mailing lists and forums can provide access to family members you don't even know you have.
  3. Take advantage of previous research. Someone in your family may have already started mapping out the family tree, so search for any previous research that may have been done before you expend unnecessary energy reinventing the wheel. Pedigree databases like RootsWeb and FamilySearch.com provide access to previously researched family trees, which may even include contact information for the original researcher.
  4. Perform a death record search. As death records are typically the most recent record created for a deceased family member, they are often easier to find than records of other kinds. Search through the various online death indexes that are provided by both official and volunteer organizations to fill in the gaps on your family tree. If you're located in the U.S., the Social Security Death Index is available for free searches from multiple sources.
  5. Make use of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Few sources have more information on ancestry than the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. FamilySearch has been gathering information on genealogy for over 100 years, using the resources of their 4,500 family history centers (located in 70 countries!) and the renowned Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Asbestos Exposure | HealthAware.co

Asbestos is the name for several silicate compounds that have a natural form of long, thin fibers. There are 6 minerals classed as asbestos in the United States, all of which are known to cause cancer, and other significant health problems.
Asbestos has a unique property of being easily formed and manipulated, and being resistant to fire, heat, cold and acids. For this reason it has been used for hundreds of years, even being woven into fire proof clothing. With the coming of the industrial age, asbestos found a number of uses, especially in construction, where it?s insulating abilities was extremely valuable.
Unfortunately, that value led many companies to ignore the known health risks of working with asbestos. It is estimated that from ship building alone in the US 100,000 people have or will die from asbestos exposure.
Today there are regulations when dealing with asbestos requiring workers to wear protective clothing, goggles and masks to avoid or reduce exposure to asbestos, and asbestos is being replaced in construction and other industries with safer alternatives.

Who is at risk of asbestos exposure?

Asbestos was used to make pipe fittings, electrical insulation, drywall and other construction materials, as well as brake pads and fittings for vehicles. Plumbers, electricians, demolition workers, workers rehabilitating and repairing old builders can all be exposed to asbestos through their work on buildings constructed between the late 1800s and the 1970s. Mechanics and vehicle enthusiasts can be exposed to working on or refurbishing older vehicles.
Additionally, anyone who worked in mining or manufacturing asbestos, and anyone who lives in a town where asbestos was mined or asbestos factories were running may have been exposed.

Effects of Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos exposure can lead to a variety of medical problems, mostly effecting the lungs. The more exposure a person has had, the more likely they are to develop asbestos related health problems. Smoking increases the risk of these problems.
Mesothelioma ? also known as ?asbestos cancer?, mesothelioma develops in the lining around the lungs, heart or abdomen. Mesothelioma will often not develop until decades after exposure. It has been estimated that 14 out of 1000 people with long term asbestos exposure will develop mesothelioma.
Lung Cancer ? by far the most common result of asbestos exposure is lung cancer. People with long term exposure to asbestos are more likely to develop lung cancer then people who have not been exposed to asbestos.
Asbestosis ? this non-cancer disease of the lungs is directly caused by the damage asbestos does when it is inhaled. As the damage from asbestos fibers heal, scar tissue is formed in the lungs. Over time, if enough scar tissue forms, it will interfere with the transfer of oxygen to the blood. Asbestosis symptoms include a crackling sound in the lungs when breathing and shortness of breath. There is no cure at this time.

Precautions when dealing with asbestos exposure

Because of the dangers posed by asbestos, it is important for anyone who might be exposed to asbestos to protect themselves. If you believe you may be living in a building with asbestos, you can contact local health department or a certified lab to test for asbestos. In general, as long as asbestos containing materials are undamaged and not disturbed, there is no reason for concern, but when doing repairs or renovations, use masks and other protective gear, and shower and change clothing when you are done, to avoid second hand exposure.

Scott, Henry off to fast start as storm gathers

(AP) ? Adam Scott and J.J. Henry got off to a good start. The same could not be said of the PGA Tour playoffs for the FedEx Cup on a water-logged course at The Barclays.

Scott made it through a wild nine holes Thursday in which he made only one par and still shot 31. Henry opened with five straight pars, followed by six consecutive birdies. He made bogey on his 12th hole to fall into a tie with Scott at 5 under.

That's as far as it got for the morning. The siren sounded because of dangerous weather in the area, and it began pouring an hour later. That led to a delay of 2 hours, 45 minutes before the early starters could even resume their round.

With scattered rain forecast, it was all but certain the first round could not be concluded Thursday.

And the worst of it might be coming because of Hurricane Irene. The forecast is for more rain to arrive Saturday and into Sunday. PGA Tour officials have not disclosed any options for trying to finish the tournament.

The top 100 from the 125 players who qualified for the playoffs will advance to the second tournament next week outside Boston, although that doesn't start until Friday because of its traditional Labor Day finish.

Among those who had not teed off include Luke Donald, who is trying to become the first player to win money titles on the PGA and European tours, and Phil Mickelson.

Nick Watney, the No. 1 seed, was even par through seven holes.

Scott had an ominous start when he three-putted from about 20 feet above the hole on No. 10, where he started his round. Then came a tee shot on the par-3 11th that rolled down a slope to 4 feet, the first of three straight birdies. He eagled the 16th and finished off the back nine with another birdie.

Henry got his round going on the 15th, and he holed a 25-foot birdie on the 17th to keep his birdie streak alive. He dropped a shot on the par-3 third hole by going just over the green into the deep rough and failing to get up and down.

Steve Stricker, who plays his best golf this time of the year, was at 3 under through seven holes.

Analysis: Japan's politics offer sober economic policy lessons (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? U.S. and euro zone governments drowning in debt should look no further than Japan to learn what happens when political deadlock stifles decisive policy-making.

As Japan prepares to usher in its sixth prime minister in five years, Moody's this week cited the political revolving door in Tokyo as one reason for cutting the country's credit rating, to AA3, for the first time since 2002.

The conclusions to be drawn from Japan's two decades of anemic growth come with caveats: its parties are not as ideologically divided as Democrats and Republicans in the United States; and political stasis has not led to the sort of bond market attack that felled Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

But the downgrade, which followed America's loss of its totemic AAA rating from Standard and Poor's, chimes with the view that the current travails of mature industrial democracies are due as much to poor leadership as they are to too much debt.

Marcus Noland, deputy director of the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, traced Japan's stagnation to an incapacity to forge the political coalitions needed to overcome entrenched interests opposed to reform.

"In that sense, the challenge that Japan has in large part failed to address over the last 20 years resembles the challenges that both the United States and parts of Europe are beginning to face," Noland said. "The Japanese example stands as a very cautionary tale about the long-run costs of not getting it right."

BERNANKE'S ANALYSIS

Back in 2002, Ben Bernanke argued that Japan's losing battle with deflation was a special case, a by-product of a protracted failure by politicians, businessmen and the public to agree on how to spread the costs of writing off debt and enacting reforms.

"In the resulting political deadlock, strong policy actions are discouraged, and cooperation among policymakers is difficult to achieve," said Bernanke, then a Federal Reserve governor and now its chairman.

Stephen King, chief global economist at HSBC in London, said that, with political leaders increasingly in denial and hoping that something will turn up, Bernanke's analysis now extended more widely.

"What we are now discovering is that there are similarities between political discord in Japan and what we're beginning to see in the States and in Europe," King said. "If that's the view Bernanke had back in 2002, he ought to be really worried now."

The conventional wisdom is that Japan relaxed monetary policy too slowly to counter deflationary forces after sky-high property and share prices started tumbling back to earth in the early 1990s.

Nominal gross domestic product in Japan is back to 1991 levels, noted Paul Sheard, Nomura's chief economist. That weighs on wages, increases the burden of repaying debt and corrodes confidence.

Western policymakers have taken much more aggressive action than Japan since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008 threatened to drag down the global financial system.

U.S. banks wrote off more than $1 trillion in net assets in 2008/2009; Japan, by contrast, dragged its feet, said David Hale, who runs an international economic consulting firm in Chicago.

"Here we recognized the losses in our banking system very quickly," Hale said. "The Japanese knew in 1992 that they had a massive problem, but it wasn't acknowledged until 1998."

Despite the swifter response, economic recovery in the West has been fitful. Fears of a new recession are mounting.

In King's view, this shows that Japan's malaise is only partly down to indecisiveness in the 1990s; it was also a result of its failure to prevent the bubble in asset prices in the first place -- much as U.S. and European policymakers allowed their own bubble in housing and credit to inflate.

Seen in this light, America and Europe are in the same pickle as Japan: with current and future economic activity no longer strong enough to allow all financial claims to be settled, a way has to be found to share out the ensuing losses.

"There has to be a process of deleveraging and burden-sharing, and the problem with burden-sharing is that it's an inherently political process," King said.

And, as in Japan, political leaders in the United States and Europe are offering few answers. With indecision breeding uncertainty, investors have been seeking refuge in gold, the Swiss franc and, ironically, government bonds.

THE WAY AHEAD

The risk for all three economies is that, without a clear strategy for reducing deficits over time, bond market investors will lose confidence and demand a growth-sapping premium to roll over debt -- as governments on the euro zone's periphery have discovered.

In the case of Japan, the leadership needed to rise to the challenge appears nowhere in sight, said Peter Drysdale, emeritus professor at Australian National University in Canberra.

"What could be carried in the way of economic and administrative inefficiencies in a country whose population was young and still growing, and in which the opportunities for catching up to the industrial world were palpable, now are huge dead weight burdens in a mature industrial economy with a declining workforce and population," Drysdale wrote on the East Asia Forum website.

The 2012 presidential election might break the U.S. political impasse. Euro zone leaders might put aside their differences and thrash out a long-term plan to underpin their single currency. In Japan, a more dynamic leader might emerge in the mold of Junichiro Koizumi, prime minister from 2001-2006.

But Wendy Dobson at the University of Toronto expects instead a prolonged period of uncertainty. Global shifts in comparative advantage are worsening the distribution of incomes and wealth in major economies, prompting strong political pushback from the losers.

"Smart politics and policies will help the transitions. Strong leadership too. But with many democracies able only to produce unstable coalitions, strong leadership seems to be in short supply," Dobson said in an email.

Advice On Hearing Aid Repairs ? Health & Fitness

When a person has an ear impairment, they need to use special devices to overcome their condition. It is therefore important for them to take the devices for hearing aid repairs when they malfunction in order for them to be able to use them. Most of the people who use the devices have to take them for maintenance once in a while.

It is a very challenging time for a person when their device decides to malfunction. They need to look for a specialist to correct the issue at a cost. Sometimes, it is very expensive for a person to deal with the charges involved.

Sometimes, one may not have the kind of money that they are being asked for by the service provider. Other times it is just better for them to purchase a new device instead of investing in the old one. The service can now be found on the internet and the charges involved are not that high.

It is now possible for a person to access the services online. The rates offered online are usually cheaper. Carry out a comparison and find the cheapest provider who will offer you the best rates while providing quality service.

One has to be keen on the amount of money that they spend on a malfunctioned device. It is not reasonable for them to pay someone else to handle malfunctions if they can also take care of the problem themselves. Some of the problems that affect the devices are easy to fix.

The issue of hearing aid repairs is a sensitive one because the devices are very expensive. The owner also has to put a lot of thought into handling the device on their own because of the complexity of technology used. The malfunction of the device is inevitable although it can be put off by good maintenance. The producers have never been able to find the perfect mechanism of amplifying sounds. At the moment they are using a similar concept as the one in PA equipment. The models share the same components with each other.

Supporting Cheerleaders' Moms and Dads | CheerMad.com | Cheer MaD

By Lisa D. Welsh

www.CHEERMaD.com

A conversation I had at the supermarket this weekend with Mrs. B. ~the mother of one of Becky?s former elementary school classmates~ left me feeling both amused and redeemed.

Our daughters had been in the same homeroom, went to the same birthday parties, attended the same church groups and were both coached by their fathers on rival softball teams when Becky?s team beat her daughter?s team in the playoffs to end their perfect undefeated season.

But our daughters went to different middle and high schools and lost touch, though after six years it was fun to catch up with Mrs. B.

If you are a regular CHEERMaD reader, you know that Becky was an outstanding softball player who walked away from the popular sport for the lesser-known activity of Allstar cheerleading.

And nearly every day since (or so it seems) we?ve had to explain to someone what competitive cheerleading was all about.

?She?s a cheerleader, but doesn?t cheer for another team.?

?The cheerleading is the sport, not a support system for another sport.?

?She doesn?t cheer at any games.?

?It doesn?t have one season, it?s year round.?

?It?s a lot like dancing and gymnastics all rolled up into one.?

?No, they don?t have any cheers.?

So I felt both amused and redeemed when she said ?You know that competitive cheerleading Becky used to do, it?s really catching on.?

Amused that she said it as if this was news when I?ve known it for ten years, and redeemed because she knew enough about it to call it ?competitive cheerleading.?

Apparently, one of her daughter?s friends who had never cheered before but ?was an outstanding athlete in high school? was going to try out for her college cheerleading squad this winter.

As more and more people discover what we CHEERMaDs have always known, we watch cheerleading grow in popularity as more and more athletes discover the excitement, the thrill, the on-the-edge-of-chaos-but-always-controlled, adrenaline rush that is Allstars.

But we?re not quite there yet.

USA STUNT TEAMS Photos courtesy of USA CHEER

As Andre Carter of Spirit Post reported this weekend, Bill Seely, executive director of USA Cheer, announced that the organization?s request for NCAA Emerging Sport Status was denied.

In a press release, Mr. Seely said:

?While USA Cheer was not ultimately granted Emerging Sport status at this time, we were given some clear instructions on our next steps in the process.??With only one year under our belt, we were encouraged by the response and feedback from the NCAA and are confident in our ability to provide the CWA with the information they have requested.???The NCAA?s Committee on Women?s Athletics (CWA) responded that they appreciate the efforts of USA Cheer to create an innovative sport with the mission of providing new opportunities for athletic competition for women. They also stated that they are interested in watching the sport?s growth beyond the first organized season.

In addition to having 22 teams participate in our inaugural season, we also have received interest from more than a dozen additional universities as well as several state high school associations.??USA Cheer also teamed up with the American Sports Medicine Institute to ensure that we are doing all we can to provide a safe environment for our athletes.

Photos courtesy of USA CHEER

It is USA Cheer?s belief that we?ve been given a unique opportunity ? to create a new and innovative sport that opens up important athletic opportunities for female athletes.?In keeping with the CWA?s recommendations, and in the spirit of what we are trying to accomplish for young people, we have reached out to the?National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association to begin discussions about the progress of the sport format and the potential of working together towards this common goal.?

As the authority on cheerleading, USA Cheer will continue its leadership role in uniting all of the key players in the cheerleading community under USA Cheer?s umbrella to support the growth of our newest sport.

Photos Courtesy of USA CHEER

Last year about this time, USA Cheer, the national governing body for all forms of cheerleading, announced its plans to create a new competition sport to be considered for NCAA Emerging Sport status. ??Stunt,? which is descriptive of the athletic skills pulled from traditional cheerleading, has also been tailored to follow Title IX?s requirements for intercollegiate sport. Stunt demonstrates clear differences from traditional cheerleading and offers exciting new opportunities for a wider range of participants.

We CHEERMaDs don?t need a governing body to tell us cheerleading is a sport because we?ve been supporting it with our time and dollars for years for our athletes. ?We know they are as much pioneers of a sport as Helen Jacobs; who was the first woman named by the Associated Press ?Female Athlete of the Year? in 1933?or Jackie Robinson; who became the first black Major League Baseball?player when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.

While USA Cheer?s first application for status of an emerging sport was disappointingly denied, I?m hoping the next time I bump into Mrs. B. she?ll know as much about competitive cheerleading, Allstars and Stunt as she does any female sport.

And I?ll be feeling that amused and redeemed feeling once again.

Photos Courtesy of USA CHEER

Description of Stunt
Each Stunt game will comprise four quarters in the following categories: Partner Stunts, Jumps and Group Tumbling, Tosses and Pyramids, and Team Routine.? Within each quarter, teams will perform skill sequences of varying levels of difficulty, technical execution and synchronization.? Anyone who follows sports will be able to follow Stunt. Teams compete simultaneously, and the head-to-head format simplifies the scoring process, allowing fans to track the results of the competition as each round is completed. Because of the new format, teams will have records and national rankings, which will determine their post season play, much like other sports. In addition, post season play can be tracked by the fans, much like ?March Madness.?

About USA Cheer?
The USA Federation for Sport Cheering is a not-for profit organization and is the national governing body for all disciplines of cheerleading. USA Cheer exists to serve the entire cheer community, including club cheering (All Star), traditional school based cheer programs and the new sport of ?Stunt.? USA Cheer has three primary objectives: help grow and develop interest and participation in Cheer throughout the United States; promote safety and safety education for cheer in the United States; and represent the United States of America in international cheer competitions.

About NCAA Emerging Sport Status
NCAA Emerging Sport Status requires a sport to provide additional athletic opportunities for female students, involve physical exertion with the purpose of competition, have standardized rules with a scoring system ratified by a governing body and have regularly scheduled competitions.

About Title IX
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in educational institutions where the federal government provides financial assistance. Title IX prohibits sex discrimination in athletics in the offering of participation opportunities, athletic benefits and resources, and scholarships.

Legendary secures $220 mln for China movie venture (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Legendary East, the Hong Kong-based venture launched by Legendary Entertainment this summer, will get $220 million in funding from a new investor, the company announced on Sunday.

The investor, Paul Y. Engineering Group, will take a 50 percent stake in the new company, which will fund two English-language, event-style films per year for global audiences.

"We are very pleased that PYE has committed to Legendary East. This is another important milestone following the recent announcement of Legendary East's formation," said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary Entertainment and Chairman of Legendary East.

"We are committed to China and the surrounding region for the long run, and to producingentertainment that is globally appealing in quality, scale and impact."

The funds are being raised through a public placement on the Hong Kong stock exchange. Upon consummation, publicly traded PYE will acquire the 50 percent stake in Legendary East funded by the issuance of new shares.

Legendary, led by Tull, will retain 40 percent ownership in the joint venture, and Huayi Brothers International, a third investor, will have 9 percent. A new investor, AID Partners, will take an undisclosed stake for a $35 million investment.

The company is the vision of Thomas Tull, Legendary Entertainment Chairman and CEO, who founded it with Chinese-born Hong Kong media and finance entrepreneur Kelvin Wu. Wu will be the CEO of Legendary East.

The move is the latest Hollywood venture in China's direction. Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity recently announced a partnership on mainland China to produce and distribute films for that burgeoning audience.

A leading financier of films, Legendary is increasingly entering the production space. It backed the critically acclaimed feature "Inception," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as the global blockbusters "Clash of the Titans" ($493 million worldwide) and "The Dark Knight" ($1 billion worldwide).

PYE is an international engineering and property services group, with three core business functions: management contracting, property development management and property investment in Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China. This is its first foray into the movie business.

I like the way things are going for Ballet

Ballet is a very beautiful dance. I almost said the sport, but really is not a sport. Or, is it? Madeline says, " Indianapolis ballet is a sport. "Certainly, takes skill and endurance and a certain amount of specialized information and training. But let's look at things like that. What about the cheerleaders and the like. A judge had to really decide whether or not it was a sport for funding purposes. You know what I decieded? Nope Nothing. No sport. What about running. The track is a safe sport. Organized first and second all the way to the last. However, you can run for exercise and is not a sport. As could be Friday night dance for fun and exercise, but is not a sport. What is ballet? There are competitions such as the Grand Prize of the Youth of America in the judges who rule in the art, and joy, like figure skating. Heck that is even an Olympic sport. Madeline would agree it is a sport this holiday.

Months later, Giffords now knows who gunman killed (AP)

PHOENIX ? For months after the spasm of violence that shattered her world, Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shielded from the wider scope of that January morning, when a gunman shot her in the head, badly wounding her and 12 others outside a Tucson political event.

Trying to protect her fragile state, staff and family members didn't let her know that six had perished in the Jan. 8 attack, including one of her most trusted staff members and a federal judge who was a close friend.

Just weeks ago, Giffords found out the truth, delaying a grief process the rest of the country had gone through months before.

On Saturday, a Giffords' staffer confirmed that the Democratic politician was told by her husband in late July that those who passed away included her close aide Gabe Zimmerman; U.S. District Judge John Roll, a close friend; and 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green. The Arizona Republic first reported those details early Saturday.

News of who the victims were came to Giffords just days before her surprise Aug. 1 appearance on Capitol Hill to vote on the federal debt ceiling. Her loved ones had been keeping the scope of the tragedy from her until she was strong enough to handle it.

"She knew for some time that six people had died and 13 were injured, including herself," said Mark Kimble, who is Giffords' new spokesman. "In late July, shortly before she went to Washington, she wanted to know more information, specifically about who had died. That's when her husband told her."

According to Kimble, only Giffords and her husband, newly retired astronaut Mark Kelly, were in the room when the congresswoman learned of the names of the six who died.

Later, Giffords gave her personal condolences to Zimmerman's father during a brief telephone conversation on Aug. 7, the Republic reported Saturday.

"It wasn't very long, but it covered important things," Ross Zimmerman told the newspaper. "She said she felt awful about Gabe."

The man charged in the rampage in Tucson, Jared Lee Loughner, has been at a federal prison facility in Springfield, Mo., since late May after a federal judge concluded he was mentally incompetent to stand trial. Loughner, 22, has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges. Mental health experts have determined he suffers from schizophrenia.

Meanwhile, the return of Giffords to Washington to cast a vote on debt-ceiling legislation fueled speculation about whether she'll seek re-election next year or run for a U.S. Senate seat.

Giffords, 41, hasn't yet publicly revealed her plans for the future. She has been undergoing physical, occupational and speech therapy in Houston as part of her rehabilitation.

Ross Zimmerman recalled from his recent phone conversation with Giffords that "she still has some trouble with language, but there is no question that she can get her point across and her comprehension is 100 percent.

"When she gets excited or stressed, it's harder for her to put words together in sentences," Zimmerman told the Republic. "That's the thing that she has the most trouble with. She's having to relearn language, and that's tough. She's having to learn how to write with her left hand at this point. And now, she's having to start the grieving process that the rest of us started back in January."
