Yo Ho Ho: Aug. 16th is National Rum Day | Rock UR Party Recipes

When the sun?s a-shinin? and the breeze is blowin?, we don?t exactly need an excuse to kick back with a rum drink, but if you give us one, we?ll surely take it. Aug. 16th is National Rum Day? We?ll drink to that!

After all, Lord Byron once said, ?there?s naught, no doubt, so much the spirit calms as rum and true religion.?

A little background on rum

It?s believed that rum was first distilled in mass quantities during the 17th century, after it was discovered in the Caribbean that leftover sugar cane or molasses turned out to be a boozy delight when mixed with water and left to age. Soon, distilleries across the tropical islands were churning out rum by the barrelful.

Experts report that the process was refined by New Englanders, who quickly picked up on this new intoxicating beverage. In fact, colonists thumbed their noses at the tyrannical Brits by swilling rum rather than gin as a sign that they no longer needed Mother England?s fancy liquors.

Due to its tropical origins and involvement in trade, rum soon became the drink of choice for pirates as well as the British Royal Navy. Today, rum sales are estimated to total $1.8 billion annually in the U.S. alone, according to statistics from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States.

Enough of the history lesson, let?s drink!

Rum and citrus go together well, as the sour, bright flavors of lemon, lime and orange tend to brighten rum?s sweet booziness. See for yourself by trying this totes refreshing Kiwi-Lime-Rum Slush, a perfectly chilly bevy for grownups.
