Bob Arum vows to promote Pacquiao vs. Mayweather ? Boxing - Bettor

Bob Arum vows to promote Pacquiao vs. Mayweather ? Boxing News

Top Rank?s Bob Arum has finally agreed to move forward with dialogues regarding his fighter Manny Pacquiao?s possible super-bout against WBC welterweight titlist Floyd Mayweather. Arum is in dialogues with Curtis Jackson, widely known as 50 Cents, rapper and actor, who recently joined Mayweather?s The Money Team Promotions.

?We did [speak] with Curtis Jackson, 50 Cent, but I assume they're looking at a fight next year, which we want to do. It shouldn't be hard to make and so forth. Just get it done,? Arum said in his recent interview to a reputable boxing website.

It should be noted here that Arum has previously claimed the fight might happen in 2013, April, if both fighters come to an agreement. In addition, recently Mayweather has been speaking very politely for Pacquiao, something he never did in the past. Maybe it is an indication that the unbeaten American wants go head to head with the Filipino pride soon.

Mayweather and Pacquiao are both on the verge of retirement. The Filipino former WBO welterweight champion is supposed to fight just three more fights before retiring. Similarly, Floyd Mayweather?s TMT Promotions is an indication that the welterweight might retire soon.

Earlier this year, both the fighters came close to agreeing to the fight. Mayweather, who believed Arum is being the main hindrance in making the fight happen, went onto speak to Pacquiao himself. However, the deal that was offered by Mayweather to Pacquiao was not really what the Filipino was expecting. Hence, they both disagreed to fight and went on with other opponents.

Mayweather fought Puerto Rican fighter Miguel Cotto while Pacquiao went onto fight unbeaten American fighter Timothy Bradley. Mayweather was lucky enough to extend his unbeaten streak by defeating Cotto via unanimous decision. However, Pacquiao?s luck did not shine and the Filipino lost his title to Bradley via controversial split decision.

As of now, Pacquiao is scheduled to fight on November 10, however his opponent is yet to be decided. Chances are that the Filipino might opt for a rematch against Bradley or a fourth match against Mexican foe Juan Manuel Marquez.

Israel forces demolish dwellings in illegal settlement

JERUSALEM: Israeli security forces evacuated and demolished two dwellings in the wildcat settlement of Ramat Migron during the night, a police spokeswoman said Friday.

This comes ahead of the planned evacuation of nearby Migron, the largest wildcat settlement in the occupied West Bank.

The army and police evacuated and destroyed "two illegal wooden structures in the Ramat Migron settlement," said police spokeswoman Luba Samri. She added that one of the inhabitants was arrested for attacking police officers.

Samri said "hilltop youth" occupied the dwellings, a term used for the young settlers many of whom come from remote outposts in the mountainous northern West Bank.

Israel considers settlement outposts built without government approval to be illegal and often sends security personnel to demolish them. They usually consist of little more than a few trailers.

Israel's Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the September 4 evacuation of Migron, whose dwellings will then be "moved" before September 11, already postponed from August 21.

The court rejected an appeal by 17 families who argued that they had legally bought from Palestinians part of the land on which the settlement stands.

The anti-settler movement Peace Now welcomed the supreme court decision, calling it a "victory for the state of law."

But Migron settlers angrily condemned the ruling. "This is a black day for the state of Israel," they said in a statement accusing the government of having "done nothing to stop this brutal rape."

Migron, the largest and oldest settlement outpost in the West Bank, was ordered razed by the end of March, since it was built on private Palestinian land.

The international community considers all settlements built in the West Bank -- including east Jerusalem -- to be illegal.

More than 340,000 Israelis live in settlements in the West Bank, and another 200,000 live in east Jerusalem that was occupied by Israel in 1967 and annexed.

Married life and the complexities of interior ... - Home Improvement

Married life is full of tense conversations, but one topic that has become increasingly contested over the years is interior design.

Once upon a time a wife might have had the monopoly on what the house looked like, but with the rise of feminism and the metrosexuality of the modern male, the roles have become less clearly defined. When it comes to decorating a flat or house there can often be conflict as both sides might want to take the lead.

Just like any other part of marital disagreement, the key is to compromise and make sure that both sides have the chance to let their opinions be heard. However, one caveat is that a creative vision can be stronger when it is more singularly focused, so be sensible about when you insist on having input.

Sometimes it is better to let your husband or wife take the lead on a whole room, provided that you are allowed to take the reigns in another area.

Think about what you want

It is easy to just get frustrated that your partner is just doing everything and not asking for you to contribute, but you must also have some idea what you want to add to the room, so that when they ask you how you would change things, you have more to say than just, 'I don't know'.

The breadth of options available may feel overwhelming at first, but simply cut out pictures or save webpages of things you like the look of, or just write down the names of luxury additions you like the sound of, such as custom fireplace mantels or a particular piece of artwork. That way, you have a collection of sensible ideas to discuss with your partner.

Don't be petty

No matter how strong your relationship is, sometimes you will get into arguments - an interior design discussion may be one of those times. Rather than let it become a petty spat, try to stay calm and think about what the pair of you are trying to achieve. Taking a break or reframing the argument can help to offer fresh perspective.

Make your feelings clear

More than just staying calm, you need to communicate what it is that you want. This might sound easy, but if you do not know the right lingo then it can be tricky to describe what you mean. If you are stumbling over descriptions, then think about drawing sketches or cutting and pasting pictures from magazines. Anything to push your message across and help you achieve the home you want.

The Last Gasps of the Ron Paul Movement

120829_POL_Weigel_PaulRebellion Matt McDonald, a Ron Paul delegate from Maine who was ousted by a convention rule, explains the situation to reporters

Photograph by David Weigel.

Read the rest of Slate?s coverage from the GOP convention.

TAMPA ? Sen. Rand Paul was trapped in a corner. It?d been like this all afternoon. He?d been walking the floor of the Tampa Bay Times Forum, hounded by reporters, having the same conversation with every delegate loyal to his father?s campaign as bulky cameras nosed in. They were diehards, angry that a quick vote on the Republican National Convention platform had affirmed a rule that blocked some of their fellow delegates. David Jaques, an Oregon ?Ron Paul follower for 20-plus years? told the senator that he still wanted to put the candidate?s name into nomination. The senator kept telling him not to.

?It does break my heart,? he said. ?But we fight on. We won?t stop. We?ve just got to follow the rules.?

?We tried to play by the rules in Oregon,? said Jaques, ?and they just threw ?em out the window.?

Sen. Paul reasoned with him. ?Realize, as I go about this room, hundreds of people have come up to me,? he said. ?There is support out here. We?re not gonna win this time. Maybe next time. Maybe the time after. The party can only grow bigger, and there?s only so many places they can win without us.?

Right then a short, white-bearded man marched past Sen. Paul, over to his chief of staff, Doug Stafford. It was Ben Ginsberg?veteran of the Bush-Gore recounts, top legal macher for Mitt Romney, ?the lawyer for the Republican establishment,? author of a new Republican National Committee rule that would bind delegates more closely to winning candidates. Ginsburg, carrying a sheaf of papers, leaned in and buttonholed Stafford.

?I?ve got your guys trying to put Paul?s name into nomination,? he said, pointing at the papers. ?Right here, buddy.?

Ginsberg, having delivered the message, kept on walking. Stafford didn?t know what to say. ?He was yelling so much that I couldn?t hear him,? he explained.

But Ginsberg had nothing to worry about. There would be no nominating Ron Paul from the floor. John Sununu?who had just gotten the new rules pushed through the committee?nominated Mitt Romney for president. Nobody nominated Ron Paul. After each state announced its delegate totals, only Romney?s totals were repeated and put on the convention?s mega-screens.

The Paul fans, with a combination of irritation and acceptance, would try and amend that by?what else??yelling. It went like this:

State: Missouri casts four votes for Ron Paul, and 45 votes for the next president of the United States, Mitt Romney!

Chair: Missouri: 45, Romney!

Whole bunch of people: And four for Ron Paul!

HTC EVO 4G LTE update brings Android 4.0.4 and Sense 4.1, dash of improved data for good measure

HTC EVO 4G LTE update brings latest Android and Sense 41, dash of improved 3G for good measure

Give your HTC EVO 4G LTE a quick update scan if you haven't lately. Sprint has started pushing out an upgrade that brings its flagship phone both to Android 4.0.4 and to Sense 4.1, putting the EVO's software on a par with the just-unveiled Desire X. Patching up doesn't bring a revolution in features -- you'll mostly notice the known option to change the multitasking button's functionality and hide the on-screen menu key. However, there's a lot of Sprint-specific fixes that make the update worthwhile, such as an LTE "scanning improvement" that some owners suggest is improving their overall cellular data quality. If you already have the update, let fellow readers know how well it's working for you in the comments.

[Thanks, Jason]

Euro Heads Higher in Forex Trading | Oakshire Financial

Currency market news

Euro is heading higher in forex trading on the currency market today, gaining as expectations of some sort of plan from the ECB boost some level of optimism.

The news that Mario Draghi is skipping the Jackson Hole summit later this week isn?t hurting the euro. Indeed, some are hoping that he will be hard at work, meeting with eurozone leaders to come to a solution.

For now, the euro is seeing some strength. The upside, however, is likely to be limited. Until some details are agreed to, and until a plan is released, there is still some uncertainty surrounding what, exactly, will be done ? and whether it will be enough to save the eurozone.?

Restart date unclear for Venezuela refinery hit by blast

CARACAS (Reuters) - A restart to production at Venezuela's largest oil refinery, closed since Saturday by the world's deadliest refinery accident in fifteen years, could take another two to three days, officials said, although an exact date was unknown.

Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez said in televised comments on Wednesday that fires at the Amuay refinery, where 48 people died, had been finally extinguished and workers were moving ahead with preparations to restart production.

The "gradual" process could possibly take "two or three days", Ramirez said, although officials at the refinery told Reuters the final timing for a restart could not be determined while parts of the facility continued to cool.

"While the cooling efforts continue, we can't know an exact date," said an official from state oil company PDVSA, which runs the 645,000 barrels per day refinery.

Meantime, authorities will continue to investigate what may have caused the gas leak that led to the blast.

In addition to those killed, the pre-dawn explosion destroyed hundreds of nearby homes. The accident was the most deadly for the global oil industry in recent years, nearing the toll of a 1997 fire at India's Visakhapatnam refinery, which killed 56.

Ahead of presidential elections in October, opponents of President Hugo Chavez have seized upon the blast to criticize what they say is poor upkeep of facilities in the oil industry, the motor of Venezuela's economy. Before Saturday's blast, the country's refineries have routinely suffered lesser accidents and numerous unplanned outages.

I Want to Sell Online But What About Internet Piracy? - CD Technical

Although the Internet swings open wide the doors of visibility and communication between customers and business, the very legitimate threat of internet piracy is enough to dampen the spirits of any content or product producer. Certain types of products, especially intellectual property and software, are especially susceptible to piracy by unscrupulous third parties, which can mean a definite and substantial loss in revenue for you, the content producer.

There are some very specific things that you can do to minimize your risk of losing profitability due to piracy. Below are few of the tried-and-true tips that you can incorporate in order to release your works online without fear of piracy.

Before anything, factor in piracy into your calculations

All businesses, whether they are brick-and-mortar businesses or online businesses, always have a line item in their budgets that deals with lost inventory. Internet piracy is simply a cost of doing business in the online world, especially with intellectual property and software. Although the tips below will teach you how to minimize piracy, you will do much better if you go in with realistic expectations from the beginning.

Make sure that you only sell under reputable dealers

Top retailers have their own anti-piracy mechanisms already built-in. If you are self-publishing, make sure that you are retailing only at the highest end online retail stores. Do not fall victim to the ?mass-marketing? scheme unless you are going for visibility above profitability. You do not need to have your products in the most places to be the most profitable. As a matter of fact, because piracy is so much more prevalent when the product originates from a source of ill repute, you may actually lose profitability if you are not discerning with your retail outlets.

Implement your own anti-piracy devices

For intellectual property and software, consider an anti-piracy script. This is not something that you have to spend a great deal of money on; in fact some anti-piracy scripts can be found for free on beta websites.

Again, you must have a realistic expectation of what anti-piracy measures can bring you, especially your free options. Hackers will always be one step ahead of the technology that is available, so you are only trying to stop piracy from those customers who would purchase your product if they could not get it free. There are some people who would only read or use your materials if they were free, and they would not increase your profitability even if there was no piracy on the Internet. Do not worry about this crowd; focus on the audience that needs to be kept honest.

Get a good lawyer

If your materials are pirated in bulk, you may be able to prosecute and get your lost profits back. If you notice that piracy is getting out of hand above and beyond your initial markers set in tip one, you may benefit from a legal and technical opinion.

As with many other types of criminals, pirates who steal in bulk leave trails, even though they do their best to cover them. Everyone makes mistakes, and if you have the right technical and legal expertise on your side, you may be able to track them down and recover some of your lost profits, if not all. Consider, however, that this is usually only worth the time and expenses involved if the piracy is truly done in bulk.

With the internet being the global platform for digital delivery that it is we must take the bad with the good and do our best to take all steps necessary to protect our work and educate ourselves on internet piracy.

AB Diamond ? Your Internet Home Based Business and Your Mindset

internet home based business

Working toward building a successful internet home based business has so much to do with setting goals and taking actions. You need to set short term reachable goals that you can take immediate and concrete actions. You also need to have long term goals that you are working to obtain.
One of the things I?ve been learning lately has to do with the idea of having the right mindset. It is vital that you develop the right mindset in order to be successful in an internet home based business. But saying you are going to develop the right mindset is easy. But actually altering your existing mindset requires much more effort.
One of the advantages of tying yourself into an MLM program or purchasing an affiliate product, is that they are often specifically designed to train you how to change your mindset. There are also plenty of books on amazon.com that deal with the mindset issue.
Changing your mindset is something that I have discussed briefly before. I have spoken about the need to move from an employee to an entrepreneurial mindset. But actually changing your mindset is a process that can be difficult and requires personal commitment. It is sort of like going through personal therapy. But again, it is necessary in order to achieve your goals and be successful at your internet home based business.

I suggest you find some help on the issue. Recently I was able to watch a recorded webinar by Rob Fore that provided some important insights into the psychology of the conscious and unconscious mind that is keeping us from attaining goals that we truly consciously belief we want to attain.
I accessed the training through my membership to MyLeadSystemPro, a program which I highly recommend if you are either beginning, planning to begin, or struggling in your internet home based business. I am finding that MLSP is a very useful way to improve our chances of success in our other internet endeavors. I?m involved in a couple of MLM programs and I find that MLSP builds on some of the concepts I learned in Mike Dillard?s book and program, ?Magnetic Sponsoring?, which I truly believe is required reading and the first step toward success in an internet home based business.
But back to the issue of mindset, the were some very important issues pointed out by Rob Fore as to why we often don?t achieve the goals that we set and consciously truly desire to achieve. You see by understanding how the conscious and unconscious minds work you begin to see that it is not as simple as consciously setting goals and then taking actions to achieve them.

The unconscious mind and your internet home based business

The unconscious mind is extremely powerful and has a lot to do with our ability to achieve our conscious goals and desires. The unconscious mind is programed by past events and feelings that can present roadblocks to achieving what the conscious mind thinks it wants, no matter how strongly we believe we want something or how hard we work to reach those goals.
It is necessary to actively work to reprogram our unconscious mind to eliminate these roadblocks that it has set. You also need to understand that the unconscious mind sets up these roadblocks in an effort to protect us based on some limiting past experience or event. Our unconscious mind is concerned with our survival and will kick in to protect us from repeating past negative experiences and feelings. This can make it impossible to achieve success today in your internet home based business.
So Rob Fore explains this much better than I can, and offers a technique to overcome these unconscious roadblocks that limit our ability to achieve our goals. It has a lot to do with why so many people who set goals self-sabotage their efforts and fail. I know I have a lifetime history of self-sabotage and I?m grateful that I found this information to help me overcome these unconscious roadblocks. It has allowed me to change my mindset and has made personal success in my internet home based business achievable.
I?m not sure if the webinar is available on uTube. But I know you get it in the back office of MSLP. The value of this webinar and the techniques it presents makes joining MyLeadSystemPro a bargain. It gives you a fighting chance at altering your mindset and achieving the success you desire in your own ?internet home based business?.

Do you have the right mindset for success in your internet home based business?

Christie fires up Republicans with Obama critique

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? With a rowdy fist-pump, blunt and brash New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie lit a fire under the Republican National Convention, labeling Democratic President Barack Obama part of the complacent status quo.

"It's been easy for our leaders to say not us, and not now, in taking on the tough issues. And we've stood silently by and let them get away with it," the first-term Republican governor said with a rock star's rasp during the keynote address Tuesday night. "But tonight, I say enough."

His mission was to make the case against Obama and fire up a convention delayed in its start by a tropical storm.

Like a coach before a football game, Christie implored the thousands inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum to rally behind GOP nominee Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan.

"Everybody stand up. There's no time left to waste," the outspoken former prosecutor shouted.

"What will our children and grandchildren say of us? Will they say we buried our heads in the sand, we assuaged ourselves with the creature comforts we've acquired, that our problems were too big and we were too small, that someone else should make a difference because we can't?" he told his fellow Republicans. "Or will they say we stood up and made the tough choices needed to preserve our way of life?

Judging by the thundering cheers inside the arena, Christie hit his mark. That outspoken style made him a Republican Party star and helped earn him the plum, prime-time speaking gig.

He rocketed up the GOP ranks in 2009, winning the Democratic-heavy Eastern state the year after Obama was elected and establishing a reputation as confrontational to big labor and public employees. Early in the GOP nominating campaign, Republicans uninspired by Romney aggressively urged Christie to seek the nomination.

New York delegate David Shimkin said he admired Christie's frankness. "He doesn't seem to have a filter. A lot of candidates don't do that," Shimkin said.

As keynote speaker, Christie was tasked with making the prime-time pitch for Romney, who remains something of a mystery to voters even though polls show him locked in a close contest with Obama.

Christie considered running for the nomination himself but months ago decided to endorse Romney, who made a personal entreaty for Christie's support as the GOP primaries were getting under way.

Christie on Tuesday waved off a published report that he had turned down an offer to be Romney's running mate because he didn't think Romney could win in November.

"Not only do I believe he can win, I think he will win," Christie told "CBS This Morning."

Temperamentally and stylistically the opposite of the buttoned-up Romney, Christie acknowledged in interviews that the former Massachusetts governor has work to do to close the sale with some voters, especially women.

"Mitt Romney's going to have to win this campaign. He's going to have to let the American people see who he is," Christie said on ABC's "Good Morning America," adding that Romney's choice Ryan as his running mate had brought more energy to the ticket.

After he toppled Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine in 2009, national Republicans embraced Christie for his tough talk on fiscal matters and for taking on public employee unions, especially teachers. Web videos of Christie berating teachers at town hall meetings quickly went viral, giving Christie a large national audience. Critics dubbed him "Gov. YouTube," suggesting he was more interested in getting publicity for himself than for improving New Jersey's finances.

Democrats warned that viewers shouldn't buy Christie's claim of a "Jersey comeback." They pointed to economic data showing the state still grappling with weak employment and high property taxes.

"Chris Christie is taking the stage in Tampa tonight to talk about his favorite topic: himself," state Assemblyman John Wisniewski told reporters during a conference call before the speech. "Gov. Christie's record in New Jersey is certainly not a model for our nation, and the people in Tampa should know that."

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and a likely 2016 presidential contender, went further, saying he expected Christie to deliver an "angry, Don Rickles keynote extolling the virtues of their candidate, Mitt Romney, who had one of the worst job creation rates in the nation."

Teresa Giudice to (Imaginary?) Fans: Thank You!

Teresa Giudice would like to thank her fans for their recent show of support.

And THG would like to ask: Who are Teresa Giudice's fans?!?

The Real Housewives of New Jersey cast member continues to be embroiled in a feud with Caroline Manzo - which stems from Teresa comparing Caroline's Italian authenticity to that of the Olive Garden in her cookbook - and, in the wake of Manzo once again lashing out, has taken to Twitter to write:

"Thanks for watching the show everyone. Thanks again for the support."

Teresa Giudice and Her Book

Giudice has referred to Caroline as a "very angry person" and WENT OFF on her during the last episode, slamming Manzo as "a f--king c--nt [who] can go f--k herself."

You can fill in those blanks. And then you can response: Whose side are you on in this feud?

Eyeless Australian fish have closest relatives in Madagascar

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A team of researchers from Louisiana State University and the American Museum of Natural History has discovered that two groups of blind cave fishes on opposite sides of the Indian Ocean are each other's closest relatives. Through comprehensive DNA analysis, the researchers determined that these eyeless fishes, one group from Madagascar and the other from similar subterranean habitats in Australia, descended from a common ancestor before being separated by continental drift nearly 100 million years ago. Their study, which appears in the journal PLoS ONE this week, also identifies new species that add to existing biological evidence for the existence of Gondwana, a prehistoric supercontinent that was part of Pangaea and contained all of today's southern continents.

"This is the first time that a taxonomically robust study has shown that blind cave vertebrates on either side of an ocean are each other's closest relatives," said Prosanta Chakrabarty, an assistant professor and curator of fishes at Louisiana State University's Museum of Natural Science. "This is a great example of biology informing geology. Often, that's how things work. These animals have no eyes and live in isolated freshwater caves, so it is highly unlikely they could have crossed oceans to inhabit new environments."

The cave fishes, of the genus Typhleotris in Madagascar and Milyeringa in Australia, are small -- less than 100 millimeters long -- and usually lack pigment, a substance that gives an organism its color and also provides protection from the sun's ultraviolet radiation. These characteristics, coupled with a lack of eyes and enhanced sensory capabilities, allow cave fishes to survive in complete darkness. For this reason, the fishes have very restricted distributions within isolated limestone caves. It's also why the newfound genetic relationship between the trans-oceanic groups is an exciting geological find.

"The sister-group relationship between cavefishes from Madagascar and Australia is a remarkable example of Gondwanan vicariance -- a geographical split dating back to the Late Cretaceous some 100 million years ago," said John Sparks, a curator in the Division of Vertebrate Zoology at the American Museum of Natural History. "The interesting thing about Madagascar's extant freshwater fish groups, with the exception of a single species, is that all exhibit relationship patterns that are in time with the Mesozoic breakup of Gondwana -- some are related to groups in India/Sri Lanka, and others to groups in Australia. Only a single freshwater species has its closest relative in nearby Africa."

One of the new species discovered by the researchers, which will be named in a future publication, is a novelty among cave fishes because it is fully and darkly pigmented. The analysis the researchers conducted for this fish's tree of life shows that it evolved from a pigment-free ancestor, indicating that some subterranean forms can "reverse" themselves for this character.

"It is generally thought that cave organisms are unable to evolve to live in other environments," Sparks said. "Our results, and the fact that we have recently discovered new cave fish species in both Madagascar and Australia belonging to these genera, are intriguing from another perspective: they show that caves are not so-called 'evolutionary dead ends.'"

Funding for the research expedition was provided by the Constantine S. Niarchos Expedition Fund, established by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to support the research of museum curators around the globe. This particular expedition turned into more of an adventure than the group was planning -- in fact, one of the new species has been given a moniker that means "big sickness" in Malagasy because of the dangers the team incurred while searching for specimens in this dry, inhospitable region of Madagascar.

"Only two specimens of the new pigmented form were recovered from the first cave we searched in Madagascar, despite the fact that we spent hours in this sinkhole," said Chakrabarty. "Even the locals hadn't been inside of it before."

Because remote locales with caving opportunities exist all over the world, the researchers are eager to pursue other opportunities for discovery.

"Conducting this research really developed my love for caving," said Chakrabarty. "You don't always find something exciting. But, when you consider how isolated many of these caves are, especially in places like Madagascar, and how unaffected they have been by the passage of time, you know that the fish in there are going to tell a really good story."

DNP EMBARGO Samsung unveils new Series 7 and Series 5 AIOs Windows 8 and gesture recognition for $749 and up

Samsung teased a Series 7 all-in-one running Windows 8 -- on a 10-point touch display -- at Computex in June, and today the machine gets official with pricing and specs. The Series 7 will be available in 23- and 27-inch flavors, both of which run Microsoft's latest OS on a 1080p touchscreen. The setup includes a redesigned keyboard, which is small enough to tuck under the display's metal stand, and the AIOs will support gesture recognition. The 23-inch Series 7 costs $1,099 and runs a Core i5 CPU with 6GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and Intel Graphics 4000. The 27-inch model offers a Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and discrete AMD Radeon HD 7850M graphics, all for $1,699.

In addition to refreshing its Series 7 machines, Samsung is introducing the 21.5-inch Series 5 all-in-one, which it describes as a "kitchen-style PC." Its legs are on either end of the display, leaving room to stow the keyboard under the screen and freeing up your desk (or counter) space. The Series 5 will go for $749, and it includes a Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and 500GB of storage. All three AIOs have two USB 3.0 ports, three USB 2.0 connections, HDMI and a media card reader, and all will go on sale October 26th. You know the drill -- head past the break for our hands-on photos.

Egypt's 'Google Earth pyramids' revisited

Google / DigitalGlobe / GeoEye

An intriguing site near an Egyptian town called Dimai consists of a large, square formation and smaller features.

By Alan Boyle

Remember that researcher who thought she spotted previously undiscovered Egyptian pyramids in Google Earth imagery? It turns out that there really are some ruins in the picture, but they?re not pyramids.

That's the verdict of an Italian archaeologist who has been surveying the area around the present-day town of Dimai in Egypt's Fayoum Desert.

"The features in Google images are well-known since 1925, when they were surveyed by G. Caton-Thompson and E.W. Gardner," Paola Davoli, an Egyptologist at Italy's University of Salento and co-director of the Soknopaiou Nesos Project, told me in an email. "They are natural mounds surmounted by a building (the biggest one) and by dug wells (in the other cases). For sure they are not pyramids, but their date and use are still not known."

The Dimai formations have been a subject of interest for many years. "We [have] still not dug them, but they will be the objects of future study by the Soknopaiou Nesos Project," Davoli said.

For more than a decade, the project has been doing a territorial survey of the area around Dimai, which was known as Soknopaiou Nesos during the Greco-Roman period in Egypt. The city is thought to have been founded by Ptolemy II in the third century B.C., on a site that shows evidence of habitation going back to the Neolithic period. During its heyday, it was situated on the shore of a large freshwater lake, but the lake has shrunk and gone salty since ancient times.

Davoli said the prevailing view is that the structures might have been watchtowers, designed to look over "an agricultural area or a paleo-lake just in front of them to the east," or perhaps tombs.

Dan Billin, a former newspaper reporter in New Hampshire who turned us on to the Soknopaiou Nesos Project, cites multiple reports about the Dimai site. "Micol was correct to think that at least one of the anomalies she saw on Google Earth was a man-made feature," Billin wrote in an email. "What she didn't manage to discover, however, was that archaeologists already knew about it, and that it's surrounded by numerous other archaeological sites."

Bob Brier, an Egyptologist based at Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus, said in an email that Billin's evaluation of the site "sounds like a reasonable scenario."

Google Earth via Angela Micol

Several eroded features can be seen in this image of terrain about 12 miles from Abu Sidhum, a city on the Nile.

"Note, there is no mention of pyramids," Brier wrote.

Micol had pointed to another intriguing area of the Egyptian desert with four mounds and a large, triangular-shaped plateau, alongside the Nile in Upper Egypt, 12 miles (19 kilometers) from Abu Sidhum. The prevailing view is that those formations are not mounds or pyramids built by human hands, but are buttes carved by natural erosion.

Such formations are commonly seen in that part of the desert, James Harrell, professor emeritus of archaeological geology at the University of Toledo, told Life's Little Mysteries.

Easy Home Improvement Tricks You Can Try Today | Home ...

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned vet, improving your home will improve your life. A home is truly a reflection of yourself. The information in this article is aimed at giving you ideas of things you can do to make your home, and consequently your life, better.

Put ceiling fans up in rooms that are used a lot since this will increase the circulation. Fans can help refrain air conditioning during the summer and lower heating costs in the winter. Fans typically can be switched so that they either draw or near air as needed.

Most people know about ?planting a tree for the future?. You can plant trees to grow the value of your property that your home sits on. Each single tree you plant that reaches its full size can increase the value of your home by a whopping $1000!

When you place in new woodworking in your kitchen or bathroom, it?s essential that each compartment is screwed in tight to their respective surround studs. Find the surround studs before you begin installing the cabinets so you know where the screws need to be placed. All you need is a cheap stud finder that you can pickup at your local hardware store.

Railings look good and wage safety. Key areas for railing are entrance ways, decks, platforms, sidewalks, balconies and stairways. Railings are important to have in case there are children or elders around. You can build or buy railings in a variety of materials, including copper, steel, wrought iron, cables, wood and even glass. Put in new railing to enhance your home and make it safer.

The bathroom is a very important part of a home that?s being sold. Living rooms and bedrooms are quite changeable by the new occupants of the home, but a bathroom is far more pricey to update, so it needs to be in good shape from the start. If the tub or sink are not in good condition, replace them right away. If the floors are linoleum, swap it out for tile.

When ever your home is in need of any electrical improvements, think about hiring a professional to take care of it. Professionals are aware of what is ideal and how to do it properly. You might create a larger problem if you try to do these repairs on your own.

Take note of easily noticeable improvements when making home changes. Potential buyers will not have any choice, except to judge your place by what is visible. This includes features like overgrown hedges and peeling paint, which can cost you sales. Even though cosmetic improvements are not usually the most vital improvements, when the goal is the understanding of your house, they are!

If you live near a busy street, think about getting some soundproof material installed into your walls. Select carefully which walls to soundproof, as it can become quite expensive. Bedrooms, bathrooms and equipment rooms are the most vital rooms to soundproof. The kitchen might also benefit from soundproofing, provided it is not part of an open concept home.

In the end, you will feel quite chesty of having improved your home on your own. Nobody wants to reside in a home desperately needing renovations. This info should help you get your home back to somewhere you want to be.

In desecration of crosses, Russia's Orthodox church sees dark warning

The Russian Orthodox Church said an antireligious campaign ? in sympathy with Pussy Riot punk band ? was under way after four large wooden crosses were destroyed over the weekend.

The Russian Orthodox Church is warning of an organized antireligious campaign under way against Christians in Russia, after vandals in two widely separated regions took chainsaws to four large wooden crosses over the weekend.

Church spokespeople maintain the damage was done by people who are either in sympathy or in league with the Pussy Riot collective, three of whose members were sentenced to two years in a penal colony earlier this month for profaning an Orthodox altar with an obscenity-laced "punk prayer" that called upon the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Vladimir Putin.

The four crosses were chopped down by unknown persons who left police no clues to their motives or identity. One was a large wooden crucifix erected to the memory of Soviet-era political prisoners in the far northern region of Archangelsk. Russian media reported three more wooden crosses were destroyed in Chelyabinsk region over the weekend, which is thousands of miles away in western Siberia.

A local priest in Archangelsk, Hegumen Feodosy, told the state-run Russia Today network that the destruction of the cross, just across the street from his church, was the latest in a series of arson and vandal attacks on religious symbols in his locality and around Russia.

"This comes in the context of all these incidents in recent months across the country, all this anti-church hysteria waged against our diocese, against the church authority, against everything sacred," he told RT.

But Pyotr Verzilov, a Pussy Riot activist and husband of one of the imprisoned women, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, told journalists the group has no connection with the latest episodes of vandalism and doesn't approve of them. Two members of the group, which is a radical feminist "performance art" collective, reportedly fled Russia last week to escape police efforts to arrest them in connection with the Feb. 21 "punk prayer" in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

Two weeks ago, in Kiev, members of a Ukrainian feminist "performance art" collective, Femen, chainsawed a large wooden Orthodox cross as an explicit protest against the Pussy Riot verdict. The Femen women argued they were cutting down the symbol of "a corrupt church" whose actions prop up the "dictatorship" of Mr. Putin. ?? ???

"What we're seeing here are copycat acts, people who take a signal from what Pussy Riot did, and it could be very dangerous," says Alexei Mukhin, director of the independent Center for Political Information in Moscow.

"Having said that, however, it should be noted that the church leaders are not being entirely forthcoming here. They have a vested interest in portraying themselves as victims, especially since they failed so miserably in the Pussy Riot struggle," he says.??? ????

Using the META model to build cross-cultural relationships

ContentmentINDIA: Using the META model to build cross-cultural relationships

Using the META model to build cross-cultural relationships

Am sure you know the story of the six blind men and the elephant. Each described the animal as a tree, wall, fan, rope, spear, and snake in turn, and each believed he was right. Each was creating his description from the part of the animal he was exploring. ?

I know you know where I'm going with this: The map is not the territory. Each of us interprets the world differently and responds to our internal map of reality. These maps are plotted from a variety of beliefs, values and experiences and could often prove inaccurate when communicating with others, particularly from different cultures.?Remapping via the Meta Model changes the language that guides behavior, opening one up to more choice.

We find asking the right questions allows leaders, individuals and teams across cultures to reexamine their experience or beliefs about the other.

?

We've worked with client-facing individuals who perceive the client as abrasive and difficult. There have been teams who brand their team leader as unapproachable and tyrannical. We've been able to stand in the gap and challenge these beliefs/perceptions.?We've even worked with the said leader to tweak his style. We use a combination of tools from mind maps and fish bone diagrams for the HOWs and WHATs. I've found the META model gives added impetus to problem solving.?

US soldiers punished over Quran Burning in Afghanistan

The US military said on Monday it was disciplining US soldiers over Quran Burning in Afghanistan early this year.

The U.S. military said on Monday it was disciplining U.S. troops over two incidents that provoked outrage in Afghanistan early this year, one involving a video depicting Marines urinating on corpses and another over burned copies of the Quran.

The administrative punishments -- which could include things like reduce rank or forfeiture of pay -- fell short of criminal prosecution, and it was unclear whether they would satisfy Afghan demands for justice.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai earlier this year branded the Marine's actions in the video as "inhuman," and he initially called for a public trial for the soldiers over the Quran incident.

A detailed U.S. military investigation showed that up to 100 Qurans and other religious texts from a detention center library -- a previously undisclosed figure -- were burned on Feb. 20. The investigation found that warnings from Afghans, including a Afghan soldier, had been ignored and attributed the incident in part to distrust between Americans and Afghans.

"However, I absolutely reject any suggestion that those involved acted with any malicious intent to disrespect the Quran or defame the faith of Islam," the investigating officer, Brigadier General Bryan Watson, wrote.

The question of distrust between American troops and Afghans has come into sharp focus in recent weeks due to a surge of "insider attacks," in which Afghans believed to be friendly turn their guns against U.S. forces.

Such distrust has undermined confidence in a U.S. drawdown strategy that relies on training Afghan forces -- sometimes with very small numbers of Americans partnering with them in remote locations -- so they can take over security. Most U.S. combat troops are expected to leave the country by the end of 2014.

Deadly riots, attacks on troops

The Quran-burning incident touched off several days of rioting and attacks on U.S. troops after local workers found charred copies among the trash at an incinerator at the Bagram base north of Kabul.

At least 30 people died in the violence that spread across the country after the incident, and two American officers were shot dead in a secure area of the Afghan interior ministry, a crime that remains unsolved.

The U.S. Army announced on Monday that six soldiers received administrative punishments over the incident, four of them officers and two of them non-commissioned officers, a spokesman said.

The investigation found that the texts were removed during a sweep of the library at Parwan detention facility due to concerns that detainees were using books to pass messages.

It partly blamed a translator who warned that up to 75 percent of the books were extremist in nature, including versions of the Quran, but did not instruct American forces how to properly dispose of the texts.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he believed the translator was an Afghan and that he no longer worked for the U.S. military.
The disclosures about the Quran-burning incident came the same day the Marine Corps detailed its punishment over a video that surfaced on the Internet in January. It showed Marines urinating on the corpses of dead Taliban fighters. One can be heard saying, "Have a nice day, buddy."

The investigation showed that the incident actually took place on or around July 27, 2011, during a counter-insurgency operation in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

Three Marines pleaded guilty to charges over the video, including one for "urinating on the body of a deceased Taliban soldier." Another wrongfully posed for a photo with human casualties, and the third lied about the incident to investigators.

Their identities were not disclosed, and the Marines said disciplinary actions against additional Marines would be announced at a later date.

Possible punishment includes reduction in rank, forfeiture of pay and punitive letters permanently placed in their records, the Marines said.

Astronaut self-insurance durable goods monopoly problem

First thought was adverse selection (as with preexisting conditions), but I don?t think that?s right. Better explanation is that back then no one had a clear sense of the mortality risk associated with going into space, and the population was so small it didn?t make sense for the insurance companies to invest the resources needed to come up with useful numbers. Still, hard to believe astronauts couldn?t find policies (albeit very expensive ones) at Lloyd?s of London or something.

Geraldine G. G. Laird ? Asbestos disease, mesothelioma cancers, lung cancers and asbestosis are the disorders caused owing to asbestos exposure. There are identified widespread easily use in industries and setting up elements such as fireproofing, roofing shingles, electrical insulation, furnace, hot pipe covering, and friction goods. Lid Blowing Off Romney Tax Secrecy | Angry Bear - Financial and ...

Lid Blowing Off Romney Tax Secrecy

Gawker (via Eman at Daily Kos) dropped a bombshell yesterday when it released over 950 pages of confidential documents from 21 Bain Capital-related investment vehicles, all of which Mitt or Ann Romney invested in. It made all 48 documents into a single searchable one here so that others could take a look and see what nuggets it might contain.
?
Romney previously claimed that his Cayman Island funds had to be located there in order to attract foreign investors, who invested via the Caymans so they would not be subject to U.S. taxes on their earnings, and that he did not reduce his tax bill as a result of his Cayman holdings. The newly released documents confirm that among these 21 funds, two set up a total of five so-called "blocker corporations" which allow U.S. non-profit entities to legally pretend to be foreign (i.e., Cayman) corporations in order to avoid the 35% "unrelated business income tax, which was created to prevent nonprofit groups from undertaking profit-making ventures that compete with taxpaying companies," as the New York Times reports. The still-unanswered question is whether Romney's huge 401-k, valued between $20 million and $102 million on financial disclosure forms, is one of the entities that invested in a blocker corporation, which would then refute Romney's assertion that his Cayman investments had not reduced his tax.
?
The two Bain funds with blocker corporations are Bain Capital Asia Fund LP (mentioned in the Times article; 3blockers) and Bain Capital IX Coinvestment Fund (2 blockers).
?
A second issue that has been raised is that various Bain entities converted management fees to carried interest (via Ryan Grim).

While people know that the carried interest loophole (which makes management compensation into capital gains) exists and is legal, the issue raised by Professor Victor Fleischer of University of Colorado Law School is that private equity firms have come up with a way to make fees that are unarguably management fees subject to ordinary income (35% tax) into capital gains (15% tax) by "waiving" the fees in exchange for virtually certain future profit, so that the extremely slight economic risk is disproportionately small compared to the tax gain. Fleischer argues that this is flat out illegal and concludes: "Mitt Romney has not paid all the taxes required under law." Not all experts agree. We can look forward to more argument on this issue in coming days. Even if it is legal, it is morally even less defensible than the carried interest loophole.
?
In the end, we are still left with the fact that the tax system for the 1% is different from that for the rest of us. Whether Romney releases more tax returns or not, that issue is not going away. And the drip, drip, drip of new information makes me think he will eventually cave in.
