Haitian president talks quake relief with Pope Benedict XVI

Pope Benedict XVI and Haitian President Michel Martelly discussed Thursday the state of relief efforts after a 2010 earthquake in the impoverished island nation that killed at least 250,000 people.

The Vatican said in a statement that the two discussed "the particular contribution of the Church, in terms of educational, social and charitable institutions, particularly after the earthquake that hit the Haitian people."

They agreed on the need for a "harmonious development" of Haitian society.

Martelly, a Catholic like 80 percent of Haitians, was visiting with his wife and four children on his first tour of Europe since being elected last year.

The ex-musician known as "Sweet Micky" gave the leader of the world's Catholics a brightly-coloured drum that the pope gave a playful tap on.

Martelly was due later on Thursday to meet Jose Graziano da Silva, the head of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and will then travel on to Brussels and Strasbourg for a series talks with European leaders.

In September, Martelly said his country was in dire need of more international aid.

Haiti is still "a country where everything is to be done," he said.

The country was hit again last month when Hurricane Sandy swept through, killing 29 people and leaving thousands homeless.

Khan Academy Brings Its 3,500+ Educational Videos To The iPhone

Screen shot 2012-11-28 at 7.36.16 PMWhether or not one believes Khan Academy is helping to reinvent education, it's hard to dispute the fact that Khan (and now his team) are an educational video-producing machine, or that the platform continues to diversify. In part, that started with the release of its iPad app in March. This week, Khan Academy brought its 3,600 videos to the iPhone.

Rapper PSY wants Tom Cruise to go 'Gangnam Style'

BANGKOK (AP) ? The South Korean rapper behind YouTube's most-viewed video ever has set what might be a "Mission: Impossible" for himself.

Asked which celebrity he would like to see go "Gangnam Style," the singer PSY told The Associated Press: "Tom Cruise!"

Surrounded by screaming fans, he then chuckled at the idea of the American movie star doing his now famous horse-riding dance.

PSY's comments Wednesday in Bangkok were his first public remarks since his viral smash video ? with 838 million views ? surpassed Justin Bieber's "Baby," which until Saturday held the record with 803 million views.

"It's amazing," PSY told a news conference, saying he never set out to become an international star. "I made this video just for Korea, actually. And when I released this song ? wow."

The video has spawned hundreds of parodies and tribute videos and earned him a spotlight alongside a variety of superstars.

Earlier this month, Madonna invited PSY onstage and they danced to his song at one of her New York City concerts. MC Hammer introduced the Korean star at the American Music Awards as, "My Homeboy PSY!"

Even President Barack Obama is talking about him. Asked on Election Day if he could do the dance, Obama replied: "I think I can do that move," but then concluded he might "do it privately for Michelle," the first lady.

PSY was in Thailand to give a free concert Wednesday night organized as a tribute to the country's revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who turns 85 next month. He paid respects to the king at a Bangkok shopping mall, signing his name in an autograph book placed beside a giant poster of the king. He then gave an outdoor press conference, as screaming fans nearby performed the pop star's dance.

Determined not to be a one-hit wonder, PSY said he plans to release a worldwide album in March with dance moves that he thinks his international fans will like.

"I think I have plenty of dance moves left," he said, in his trademark sunglasses and dark suit. "But I'm really concerned about the (next) music video."

"How can I beat 'Gangnam Style'?" he asked, smiling. "How can I beat 850 million views?"

Health & Fitness News | Premier Training International's Official Blog ...

In this second part of our sports conditioning series, we?re going to take a closer look at the differences between sports conditioning and personal training. The first distinction starts with the qualification. There are a number of ways of becoming qualified to be a gym instructor or personal trainer. However, in addition to holding these qualifications, a sports conditioning coach would also hold a relevant governing body accreditation for strength and conditioning ? for example, through organisations such as the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) or the National Strength Conditioning Association (NSCA) in the USA.

You can also go to university and gain a degree in a number of areas to enhance your knowledge and skills such as sports science, performance analysis, human movement/biomechanics and strength and conditioning.

In addition to qualifications, the focus of a sports conditioning coach is different to personal training. Whereas a PT may predominantly deal with those looking to improve fitness for general health and recreation, the sports conditioning coach will work with fit healthy athletes whose goal is to improve sports performance. The attainment of these objectives will invariably involve a deeper understanding of not only the sport itself, but the various demands that the sport places on the athlete.

The aims of the sports conditioning coach are to:

  • develop correct exercise skill or technique
  • improve the strength base of all athletes
  • individualise programs to address specific strengths and weaknesses
  • improve athletes' sports specific movements and techniques?
  • improve athletes' physical conditioning
All this would be done in liaison with the athlete?s technical/skills coach, physio/medical team, and psychologist ? with the common objective of working together within a set timeframe.

Join me next week, where we will be discussing the pathway to becoming a sports conditioning coach. And don?t forget to post your comments below!

Carlton Arranges $324M Recapitalization for Four Seasons Hotel ...

November 27, 2012

By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor?

Carlton Group has orchestrated quite a deal for the Four Seasons Hotel Milan in Italy. Acting on behalf of international real estate holding company Statuto Group, the real estate investment banking firm closed an approximately $324 million financing package consisting of the recapitalization of the 118-room luxury hotel and a discounted loan payoff.

It?s a high-profile transaction for a high-profile property. Housed in a restored former 15th-century convent in Milan?s Montenapoleone district, the Four Season?s Milan made a big splash on the international real estate radar in 2006, when Statuto purchased the asset from Quinlan Private in a $242 million deal that set a world record for the largest hotel transaction in terms of price per room.

Six years later, Four Seasons Milan is turning heads again with the completion of its recapitalization in what is presently a highly challenging capital markets environment in Europe. Undaunted, Carlton persevered for six months and ultimately succeeded in securing a London-based money manager to provide the capital and facilitate Statuto?s purchase of its loan from the financial institution holding the debt on hotel.? The end result: Statuto remains owner of Four Seasons Milan, having addressed financing issues without adding new equity investors.

It was no simple feat, but there may be more such deals to come. ?This transaction is a precursor to other discounted loan payoffs which will inevitably occur, now that financial institutions with European exposure look to monetize underwater loans,? said Howard L. Michaels, chairman of Carlton in a prepared statement.

According to a third-quarter report by Prudential Real Estate Investors, European banks are still holding approximately 10 percent of their loan books against commercial real estate, and thereby, ?remain at risk from the deteriorating economic outlook.?

Animals are already dissolving in Southern Ocean acid

In a small patch of the Southern Ocean, the shells of sea snails are dissolving. The finding is the first evidence that marine life is already suffering as a result of man-made ocean acidification.

"This is actually happening now," says Geraint Tarling of the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge, UK. He and colleagues captured free-swimming sea snails called pteropods from the Southern Ocean in early 2008 and found under an electron microscope that the outer layers of their hard shells bore signs of unusual corrosion.

As well as warming the planet, the carbon dioxide we emit is changing the chemistry of the ocean. CO2 dissolves in water to form carbonic acid, making the water less alkaline. The pH is currently dropping at about 0.1 per century, faster than any time in the last 300 million years.

Lab experiments have shown that organisms with hard shells, such as corals and molluscs, will suffer as a result. To build their shells, corals and molluscs need to take up calcium carbonate from the water, but more carbonic acid means more hydrogen ions in the water. These react with carbonate ions, making them unavailable to form calcium carbonate.

Aragonite shortage

The most vulnerable animals are those, like pteropods, that build their shells entirely from aragonite, a form of calcium carbonate that is very sensitive to extra acidity. By 2050, there will be a severe shortage of aragonite in much of the ocean.

Aragonite is still relatively plentiful in most of the ocean, but Tarling suspected that some regions might already be affected by shortages.

He visited the Southern Ocean near South Georgia where deep water wells up to the surface. This water is naturally low in aragonite, meaning the surface waters it supplies are naturally somewhat low in the mineral ? although not so much so that it would normally be a problem. Add in the effect of ocean acidification, however, and Tarling found that the mineral was dangerously sparse at the surface.

"It's of concern that they can see it today," says Toby Tyrrell of the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK.

Aragonite-depleted regions are still rare, but they will become widespread by 2050, says Tarling. The polar oceans will change fastest, with the tropics following a few decades after. "These pockets will start to get larger and larger until they meet," he says.

Tyrrell says the Arctic will become undersaturated with respect to aragonite before the Antarctic. Patches of undersaturation have already been seen, for instance off the north coast of Canada in 2008.

The only way to stop ocean acidification is to reduce our CO2 emissions, Tyrrell says. It has been suggested that we could add megatonnes of lime to the ocean to balance the extra acidity. However, Tyrrell says this is "probably not practical" because the amounts involved ? and thus the costs ? are enormous.

China's Wenzhou unveils reform plans as bad loans climb

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's entrepreneurial hub of Wenzhou has unveiled measures to turn grey-market lending into formal credit to support cash- starved small firms while reducing financial risks, state media reported on Saturday.

Under the plans announced by the municipal government, the wealthy coastal city of Wenzhou, aims to channel private money into local businesses through formal institutions - mainly small credit firms, the official Securities Times said, citing officials.

These credit firms will be allowed to issue bonds via private placements while qualified credit firms could be turned into rural banks, the newspaper quoted Zhang Zhenyu, head of the municipal government's finance office, as saying.

Wenzhou, in eastern Zhejiang province, is known throughout China as a Mecca for private entrepreneurship and grey-market lending.

A string of bankruptcies last year - which spawned suicides and disappearances by entrepreneurs unable to repay high-interest loans - prompted a visit by Premier Wen Jiabao and a decision to bring underground financing out of the shadows.

In March, China's cabinet approved the launch of a financial reform pilot project in the city, which it hoped to replicate across the country later to tame the underground lending market where interest rates can reach 100 percent.

Several Wenzhou-based companies have submitted applications to national regulators to set up rural banks, trusts as well as insurance and securities firms, the Securities Times said.

The city will also develop specialized asset management companies and provide support for major projects through asset securitization and bill issuance.

"(But) regulator departments will be very strict in approving new financial institutions. The financial reform won't be done overnight," the newspaper quoted Zhang as saying.

The city will publish an index to track changes in local borrowing costs as early as this month, Zhang said.

Some 30 small loan firms have already registered with the government since March, with total registered capital of more than 8 billion yuan ($1.28 billion), according to state media.

A surge in bad loans in Wenzhou has highlighted difficulties facing the free wheeling city, as private firms cannot get enough loans from state-owned banks while exporters are struggling to cope with weak demand and soaring wages.

The average non-performing loan ratio at banks in Wenzhou reached 3 percent by the end of August - the highest level in at least a decade, according to local media.

Wenzhou is awaiting cabinet approval to allow the city's residents to make direct overseas investments in yuan, the newspaper quoted Wu Guolian, head of the local branch of the People's Bank of China, as saying. Such a move would be a big step towards liberalizing capital account transactions.

China's premier-in-waiting Li Keqiang said this week that the country must embrace market-based reforms to help sustain economic growth.

Russian weapons designer shot dead on street

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A weapons designer at a Russian defense industry enterprise that makes rifles, grenade launchers and other arms was shot dead on a city street in a contract-style killing, law enforcement authorities and media reports said.

The deputy chief designer at the research and production facility in Tula, an arms-producing city south of Moscow, was found dead with a bullet wound in his head on Wednesday evening, the federal Investigative Committee said.

State television identified the victim as Vyacheslav Trukhachev and said investigators believe the killing may have been related to his job at the Central Sports and Hunting Weapons Research and Design Bureau.

Officials did not cite a potential motive, however. Russian business is plagued by corruption and disputes are sometimes resolved through contract killings.

Trukhachev was shot while walking home from work on Tula's Red Army Avenue and the killing was captured on a surveillance camera, Interfax news agency quoted a senior regional investigator, Tatyana Sergeyeva, as saying.

She said the gunman was not wearing a mask but had fled the scene immediately. It was not clear whether he acted alone or had help. The well-lit street and was not deserted and police were looking for eyewitnesses.

Russia's defense industry, the world's second-largest arms exporter, has been under increasing scrutiny since a nearly $100 million corruption scandal implicated former Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov. He was dismissed earlier this month.

Trukhachev's job involved the design and development of weapons, not sales, Interfax quoted Sergeyeva as saying.

Officials at the enterprise where he worked declined to comment.

Inhaled nitric oxide improves outcomes in mice resuscitated with stored blood

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? Inhaled nitric oxide reduced the adverse effects of transfusing stored blood in mice, according to a study from the December issue of Anesthesiology. Researchers found that inhaled nitric oxide reduced tissue injury and improved short-term survival in mice that were resuscitated with a stored blood transfusion after hemorrhagic shock.

An estimated 40 percent of critically ill individuals receive at least one unit of packed red blood cells in the intensive care unit. At Massachusetts General Hospital, the average human red cell storage duration is 16 days, and many units are stored for much longer, up to 42 days.

Transfusion of blood stored for longer durations is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, especially in patients with cardiovascular disease. Stored blood cells have reduced ability to transport oxygen, and many are destroyed after transfusion causing vascular nitric oxide, an important cellular messenger, to be scavenged.

"While blood transfusions help many patients, when red cells are stored for long periods before transfusion they can make some patients sicker," said study senior author Warren M. Zapol, M.D. "Our research was modeled in mice to reproduce the adverse effects of stored blood transfusion and to learn which recipients might be more sensitive."

About the Study

Mice were fed either a standard diet (10% calories from fat) or high-fat diet (60% calories from fat) for four to six weeks. They were then subjected to 90 minutes of hemorrhagic shock, followed by resuscitation and transfusion with either fresh blood (less than 24 hours old) or blood stored for two weeks. There was no immune response to transfusion because the mice were transfused with genetically-identical mouse blood.

Findings showed mice fed a standard diet, who received stored blood transfusion had increased tissue injury compared to those that received fresh blood transfusion. In addition, mice fed a high-fat diet that received stored blood transfusion had higher blood lactate levels and insufficient oxygen delivered via the blood stream, associated with a greater short-term mortality.

Researchers found that when mice breathed nitric oxide, during and after transfusion, they had reduced tissue injury, lower lactate levels, and less inflammation and oxidative stress. Inhaled nitric oxide also improved the short-term survival rate of mice fed a high-fat diet, who were resuscitated with stored blood transfusion.

"Resuscitation with stored blood transfusion adversely impacts the outcomes of mice with hemorrhagic shock, an effect that is exacerbated by feeding mice a high-fat diet," continued Dr. Zapol. "Our research also confirms that stored blood transfusion is bad for mice that have diabetes or are overweight, and the toxicity of stored blood in mice can be prevented with inhaled nitric oxide."

Stored blood administration remains a critical component of the treatment of hemorrhage or anemia which results in inadequate oxygen delivery to tissues.

Dr. Zapol and his team hope their findings will help to better identify those patients who will be most susceptible to negative outcomes after a stored blood transfusion, as well as highlight the benefits of breathing nitric oxide when patients are transfused with stored red cells.

Get Better Dental Care With These Great Tips - Health and Fitness ...

It can be very hard for people who are afraid of dentists to get the dental care they need. Taking good care of your teeth should be easy once you have the right information. By following the advice presented here, you will soon be headed in the right direction.

If you cannot afford dental work, see if your dentist will let you pay in installments. Often dentists offer a direct payment plan or offer the option of using a financing company. This is a good way to break the cost down into affordable chunks.

To maintain healthy teeth, get plenty of calcium. Many foods such as cheese, yogurt and milk are loaded with calcium. If you dislike eating high-calcium foods, you should think about taking a daily calcium supplement pill.

The heads on your electric toothbrush must be change every two months. The bristles can get worn out from use and the result is decreased performance in effective brushing. Your brush should also be switched out regularly because of bacteria concerns.

You should try to select healthy snacks whenever possible to cut down on the amount of damage to your teeth. When you don?t, brush your teeth soon to rid your mouth of excess sugar. By doing so, you are making yourself less susceptible to developing cavities.

Go see your dentist regularly to have your teeth cleaned and inspected. If you don?t see the dentist regularly, you could have serious problems down the road. By going to see your dentist routinely, you will be able to have any problems fixed before they get too bad.

Clean your toothbrush regularly. Thoroughly rinse your toothbrush when you are finished. Employ a vertically standing toothbrush holder to keep the head of the toothbrush from coming in contact with other things. Do not keep toothbrushes inside containers to avoid bacteria. Change out your toothbrush regularly.

Do not always believe what your dentist says. For instance, if he tells you that you are in need of a deep cleaning, seek out another opinion to make sure. Deep cleanings are very expensive, so it is important to ensure that you really need it. Your dentist could be suggesting that you need it simply because he wants your money.

If you have not done so yet, you should work hard now to make it a priority to properly care for your teeth. Develop a comprehensive and efficient dental care regimen you can apply on a daily basis. Apply everything you?ve learned from this article.

Gaza shakes, bus explodes in Tel Aviv as Clinton seeks truce

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday pursued a Gaza truce, with Israel and Hamas still at odds over key terms, as Israeli air strikes shook the enclave and a bomb exploded on a Tel Aviv bus.

After talks in Ramallah with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Clinton held a second meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before heading to Egypt, the main broker in efforts to end eight days of fighting and avert a possible Israeli ground offensive.

In Tel Aviv, at least 10 people were wounded when a bus was blown up on a main street near the Defence Ministry and military headquarters. Israel's government called it a terrorist attack.

The explosion, which police said was caused by a bomb placed on the vehicle, touched off celebratory gunfire from militants in Gaza and threatened to complicate truce efforts.

Israel's best-selling Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper said an emerging outline of a ceasefire agreement called for Egypt to announce a 72-hour ceasefire followed by further talks on long-term understandings.

Under the proposed document, which the newspaper said neither party would be required to sign, Israel would hold its fire, end attacks against top militants and promise to examine ways to ease its blockade of the enclave.

Hamas, the report said, would pledge not to strike any Israeli target and ensure other Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip also stop their attacks.

An Israeli political source said differences holding up a deal centered on a Hamas demand to lift the Gaza blockade completely and the kind of activity that would be allowed along the frontier, where Israeli troops often fire into the enclave to keep Palestinians away from an area near a border fence.

Hamas official Ezzat al-Rishq said the main stumbling block was "the temporary timeframe for a ceasefire that the Israelis want us to agree to".

"GOOD INTENTIONS"

The London-based Al Hayat newspaper, citing sources in Hamas and Islamic Jihad, said Israel wanted a 90-day period to determine "good intentions" before discussing Palestinian demands, a position the report said the groups have rejected.

Rishq said a short-term truce, whose proposed duration he did not disclose, "would only buy (Israel) time" until a general election in January and "we would have accomplished nothing in the way of a long-term truce".

Hamas sources said the group was also demanding control over Gaza's Rafah borders with Egypt, so that Palestinians could cross easily, and Israeli guarantees to stop assassinating Hamas leaders.

Israel, one of the Hamas sources said, wanted a commitment from the group to stop smuggling through tunnels that run into Gaza under the Egyptian border. The tunnel network is a conduit for weapons and commercial goods.

News of the Tel Aviv bus bombing, the first serious blast in Israel's commercial capital since 2006, emerged just after Clinton and Netanyahu ended their meeting. A spokesman for Netanyahu declined to give details on their discussions, which followed talks on Tuesday.

Clinton, who flew to the region from an Asian summit, said in her public remarks after Tuesday's meeting with Netanyahu that it was "essential to de-escalate the situation".

"The rocket attacks from terrorist organizations inside Gaza on Israeli cities and towns must end and a broader calm restored," she said.

Clinton earlier assured Netanyahu of "rock-solid" U.S. support for Israel's security, and praised Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi's "personal leadership and Egypt's efforts thus far" to end the Gaza conflict and promote regional stability.

"As a regional leader and neighbor, Egypt has the opportunity and responsibility to continue playing a crucial and constructive role in this process. I will carry this message to Cairo tomorrow (Wednesday)," she said.

"LONG-TERM" SOLUTION

Netanyahu told Clinton he wanted a "long-term" solution. Failing that, Netanyahu made clear, that he stood ready to step up the military campaign to silence Hamas' rockets.

"A band-aid solution will only cause another round of violence," said Ofir Gendelman, a Netanyahu spokesman.

While diplomatic efforts continued, Israel struck more than 100 targets in Gaza overnight, killing a Hamas gunman and destroying a cluster of Hamas government buildings.

Palestinians militants fired 31 rockets at Israel, causing no casualties, and Israel's Iron Dome interceptor system shot down 14 of them, police said.

Israel has carried out more than 1,500 strikes since the offensive began. Medical officials in Gaza said 139 Palestinians, most of them civilians, including 34 children, have been killed. Nearly 1,400 rockets have been fired into Israel, killing four civilians and a soldier, the Israeli military said.

In the West Bank city of Ramallah, Clinton held talks with Palestinian President Abbas, whose bid to upgrade the Palestinians' status at the United Nations, in the absence of peace negotiations with Israel, is opposed by Washington.

"Secretary Clinton informed the president that the U.S. administration is exerting every possible effort to reach an immediate ceasefire and the president expressed his full support for this endeavor," said Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat.

"Once the Israelis accept to stop their bombardments, their assassinations, there will be a comprehensive ceasefire sustained from all parties," Erekat said.

A Palestinian official with knowledge of Cairo's mediation told Reuters that Egyptian intelligence officials would hold further discussions on Wednesday with leaders of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad group.

"There may be a response from Israel that Egyptian mediators want to present to Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders," the official said. "Let's be hopeful it would be something Palestinian factions can accept."

Like most Western powers, Washington shuns Hamas as an obstacle to peace and has blamed it for the Gaza conflagration. A U.N. Security Council statement condemning the conflict was blocked on Tuesday by the United States, which complained that it "failed to address the root cause," the Palestinian rockets.

Hamas for its part is exploring the opportunities that last year's Arab Spring has given it to enjoy favor from new Islamist governments, and from Sunni Gulf powers keen to woo it away from Shi'ite Iran.

It may count on some sympathy from Mursi, although Egypt's first freely elected leader, whose Muslim Brotherhood inspired Hamas' founders, has been careful to stick by the 1979 peace deal with Israel struck by Cairo's former military rulers.

Along the Gaza border, Israeli tanks, artillery and infantry remained poised for a possible ground offensive in the densely populated enclave of 1.7 million Palestinians.

But an invasion, likely to entail heavy casualties, would be a major political risk for Netanyahu, who is currently favored to win the upcoming Israeli election. More than 1,400 Palestinians were killed in Israel's three-week war in the Gaza Strip in 2008-9, prompting international criticism of Israel.

India's reform drive could hit rocks in stormy parliament session

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The Indian government, reduced to a minority for the first time since coming to power in 2004, is scrambling for support ahead of a parliament session that will severely test its economic reform agenda, and its chances of success look bleak.

For the moment, there is no threat of the government falling. But an obstructive opposition and unreliable allies could mean there is little progress on reforms like opening up insurance and pension businesses when parliament's month-long winter session gets under way on Thursday.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has engaged in unusual dinner diplomacy with allies at his New Delhi home to build consensus on the next round of economic reforms, which need parliamentary approval.

Criticised in the past for cold-shouldering allies and opponents, Singh also plans to dine this week with leaders of the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whose obstructionist tactics washed out the last session. But analysts doubt he will manage to forge a consensus on the reforms.

"If things go awry, and legislation gets deadlocked it would be negative for markets and will mean those that were pessimistic on Indian reforms taking shape will be vindicated," said Suresh Kumar Ramanathan, head of regional rates and forex strategy at CIMB in Kuala Lumpur.

Analysts warn of a "nightmare scenario" in which the government loses a test vote in parliament on its flagship reform - opening up the retail sector to foreign supermarkets, a decision that has drawn fire from both opponents and allies who say it will destroy the livelihoods of mom and pop store owners.

The reform does not require parliamentary approval. But left- and-right-wing opposition parties, with an eye to upcoming state and national elections, want to use the session to hold the government to account on the policy, which they say does not have popular support.

They are pushing hard for a symbolic vote against the measure. If the government lost the vote, it would be an embarrassing setback for a policy on which it has staked so much political capital. It could also sap its political will to pursue more difficult reforms to cut high spending and reduce a ballooning budget deficit.

Most of the initiatives Singh has announced to date have required only an executive order, so this session of parliament poses the biggest test yet of his reform drive. If he fails to get key allies and the BJP on board, his reformist legislative agenda could stall.

Among the reform bills due to be introduced are measures to allow up to 49 percent foreign investment in local insurance companies and domestic pension funds. Currently, the cap for insurers is at 26 percent and foreign investors are barred from buying into pensions.

UNCERTAINTY

Uncertainty surrounding the passage of these bills has contributed to a 3.8 percent fall in the benchmark BSE stock market index since the start of October.

The rupee, meanwhile, has shed all of its gains since the government launched its new economic reform drive in September. Analysts attribute the fall to a host of factors, including the global downturn, a ballooning deficit and fears that the promised reforms may not be fully implemented.

It was not clear on Wednesday whether the government would relent and allow the vote on retail reform to go ahead or if it would concede only to a motion allowing discussion of the move but not a vote, a less risky proposition.

Singh's biggest coalition ally, the Trinamool Congress party, has withdrawn its support over the reform, leaving him in charge of a minority administration at a time when he is trying to revive growth in Asia's third-largest economy.

Trinamool is pushing for a vote of no-confidence in the government during the winter session, which - if lost - could bring the government down and trigger a national election, well before it is due in 2014. For now, few opposition parties have the stomach for an early election, preferring instead to score political points by harrying a weakened government.

But the highly fluid situation means nothing is certain.

"We expect a rocky ride," Citi Research said in an analyst note that questioned whether the government would be able to pass legislation given its minority status, despite its insistence that it has done the maths and has the votes.

The economic bills can be passed in parliament's lower house with the support of two big regional parties - the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) - which are not part of the ruling coalition but often give it support in parliament. However, the SP has previously opposed the pension and insurance bills while the BSP is keeping its cards close to its chest.

The government is in a minority in the upper house, so support from the opposition BJP is crucial there. But analysts say its unlikely the BJP will be willing to help its rival, which mean the bills could be tripped up at this last hurdle.

Joint Venture mindset - some FREE options for promoting and selling

Remember, you don?t even have to own a business to make money from Joint Venture?s, but it does help to have one.

  1. Use your own, or others?, E Newsletters (ezines). The E Newsletter that I write (Brent?s Action Packed News) reaches over 400 people internationally every month. Regular information that is actually READ, is a powerful communication and selling tool. Use others? ezines.
  2. Use a BLOG ? it?s FREE! ? a great example www.RobinJElliott.com
  3. Use a website. Mine has connected me to many people. Professional and in-expensive services are available.
  4. Give away free reports and e books ? if it?s yours, free advertising and you get to create massive credibility. (Given that you know what you?re talking about.) If not, partner with someone to give away theirs.
  5. Give away or sell audio CD?s, or have them available free of charge in audio streaming on your website.
  6. Give away free CD?s and charge for Shipping and Handling to cover your costs and even make a profit. Team up with others who already have CD?s made. Use other peoples? skills, competencies and resources.
  7. Offer to convert other people?s inactive customers into active customers for an on-going piece of the action. This idea, alone, can be worth a fortune to you, when you consider the amount of customer attrition going on.
  8. Piggy-back your product or someone else?s product, on to existing sales streams and have someone else?s sales team sell your products and services as an add-on to their existing sales.
  9. Convert unconverted leads or triangulate the deal. Switch leads between two realtors and take a piece of the action.
  10. Find people who have products they can?t move, get the products on consignment and sell them through other people distribution channels ? on consignment! No risk.
  11. Create multiple add-on sales options ? wedding planners, lube centers, webmasters, courier services and home improvement services are great for this.
  12. Buy and resell advertising space and / or services.
  13. Offer Free Seminars ? either you do them or have someone else present them.
  14. Sell Bill?s CD?s on consignment through Jack?s gas stations.
  15. Free Conference Calls are very powerful selling tools. Interview experts and they will help you sell. You don?t need any skills or money ? use other peoples? skills time, energy and money.
  16. Bundle your products with someone else?s ? every time they sell a course, they can include your CD?s!
  17. Join forces with your competitors ? together you can accomplish a lot more.
  18. Share advertising space, mailings, seminars, radio and TV time and database communication.
  19. Use Gift Vouchers ? give away samples of other peoples? services and take a piece of the resulting, ongoing business. Carpet cleaning, accounting, consulting, car services etc.

Always ask yourself, ?What does the other party REALLY, REALLY want? What is his or her HOT BUTTON??

And always ask them, ?What will it take??

Happy Joint Venturing!!

Instead of CNN, watch the RSI, for the latest in news on Israel and the Middle East proposes CaesarTrade FX-CFD

While the concerned global audience absorbs the conflict between Hamas and Israel with Turkey, Egypt, and Iran in the periphery, the purpose of the News is still to Sell the News not provide it, argues Eric Harbor, in his latest post for CaesarTrade FX-CFD. The real truth lay in the financial markets that have to deal with any type of event whether it is the 'fiscal cliff' or a war, theorizes Mr. Harbor. A good way of finding the truth is through the technical indicator RSI proposes the online Forex and CFD provider.

Dayton, OH (PRWEB) November 15, 2012

In Eric Harbor's latest blog post for traders of CaesarTrade, he proposes how the use of analyzing the price action of the Israeli Shekel, with the technical indicator RSI, can help indicate what is truly occurring in Israel and, therefore, by extension Mid East tension.

"I never used RSI, really, and was skeptical since everyone uses it, but when I started subscribing to White Wave Strategies, David Israel, the editor, was adamant that it helps you avoid being exposed when markets are exaggerated or depressed. Basically, it's a mathematical way of following Warren Buffet's axiom: 'Buy when others are fearful, and Be Greedy when others are fearful.'"

The article also presents how news outlets tend to be late in presenting a news event, but sensationalizing it, nevertheless, where the proverbial animals already left the barn. Eric reasons, "It's ironic, as we show, that while the majority don't trust technical analysis, they believe the media wholeheartedly. Yet, as shown, are not correct on market turns. No one remembers but OIL went down when the US went to war with Iraq. What we have found to make sense is the idea presented in Socionomics by Robert Prechter, where the financial markets reflect the real-time psychological phenomena of the public, but by the time it is reflected in mass media that movement already has been exhausted."

As presented in CaesarTrade's blog post, the time to be fearful or calm should not be based on news reports, but market action. For a fun and unique way to stay in touch with the markets to see the theory in action, CaesarTrade invites readers to follow through its interactive Facebook page. "It's a great place to interact and see a different approach to the financial markets while meeting new people" states Eric Harbor, ceo, CaesarTrade.

Gwinnett Medical Center Ranks among the Top 10 Percent in the ...

The latest Healthgrades report places GMC as one of the top hospitals in the state for cardiac, neurosciences, stroke, pulmonary and critical care.

Gwinnett Medical Center (GMC) hospitals in Lawrenceville and Duluth again rank as top hospitals in the state for patient outcomes for stroke, pulmonary and critical care, according to a new report from Healthgrades, the leading provider of information to help consumers make informed decisions about physicians and hospitals. GMC is the only hospital system in Georgia to be a recipient of the Healthgrades Specialty Excellence Awards for Stroke, Pulmonary and Critical Care for three consecutive years.

The results come from the report, American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2013: Healthgrades to the Nation, which evaluates how about 4,500 hospitals nationwide performed on risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for nearly 30 of the most common conditions treated and procedures performed from 2009 through 2011. Healthgrades independently measures hospitals based on data that hospitals submit to the federal government. No hospital can opt out in or out of being measured, and no hospital pays to be measured. Healthgrades risk adjusts for patient demographic characteristics and clinical risk factors, thereby taking into account how sick patients were before they were admitted to the hospital.

"I am so proud of the commitment that our physicians and associates have made to providing superior care to our patients and gratified to see how that commitment results in outstanding clinical performance," said GMC President and CEO Phil Wolfe, after receiving the results of the report. "Healthgrades provides an invaluable public service and we strive continually to deliver excellent medical care and maintain the designation as top hospitals for treating these serious illnesses both in our region, and the state."

GMC opened the Strickland Heart Center in 2011 to provide the community with access to a comprehensive array of advanced cardiovascular services, including open heart surgery. Its state-of-the-art operating rooms and cardiac catheterization laboratories feature the latest in surgical technology. GMC also operates an accredited Chest Pain Center in the emergency department, a cardiac wellness program certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and a full range of cardiac diagnostic services.

In addition to top state rankings, GMC is the recipient of many five-star designations. Healthgrades found that patients have a 75 percent lower risk of dying when treated at a hospital receiving five stars than if they were treated at a hospital receiving one star, based on risk-adjusted mortality rates across 18 common procedures and diagnoses, such as heart bypass surgery, stroke and pneumonia. GMC received five stars in the following areas:

    • Treatment of stroke for four years in a row (2010-2013)
    • Overall pulmonary services for three years in a row (2011-2013)
    • Overall critical care for three years in a row (2011-2013)
    • Treatment of heart failure for six years in a row (2008-2013)
    • Treatment of pneumonia for nine years in a row (2005-2013)
    • Treatment of sepsis for six years in a row (2008-2013)
    • Treatment of respiratory failure for three years in a row (2011-13)

A Shift From Drupal Services To Drupal Products | LevelTen | Dallas ...

While visiting BADCamp in Berkeley, CA last week, I sat in on several discussions about productizing Drupal. Jeff Walpole, CEO of Phase II opened the discussion with a presentation on various business and product models the Drupal community has embraced.

Jeff?s experience in growing a successful services company has been that of hard work, long hours and hiring top Drupal talent to fulfill the requests of his clients. His team has created several Drupal distributions that have awarded Phase II business in the government space, yet the distributions themselves have been expensive and taxing to develop and maintain, and have been difficult to quantify based on sales.

One long-term business model would be a shift to productize Drupal in a way that is sustainable, scalable and maintainable. Creating a diverse and robust ecosystem of complementary products and services that compliment the Drupal platform would benefit the community and could add recurring revenue to a business. While this model looks good on paper there are several challenges that need to be overcome.

The first challenge that arises is licensing and selling. To dispel the myth of GPL licensing, we can in fact sell Drupal core, Drupal modules, Drupal distributions, etc. The question then becomes, how can we sell something that is freely distributed? The answer to that question is complex and open for debate.

Another question asked was, even if we do sell Drupal modules and/or distributions, how do we keep others who have purchased our product from giving it away to others for free? The answer is that we cannot?unless we tie it to proprietary APIs or services.

APIs, plug-ins and 3rd party services that support Drupal seem to be the way many forward thinking businesses are approaching the product challenge. By creating these valuable APIs and/or products we can create value to the community and design a product model that broadens our revenue stream.

So what great products can we create that will both be hugely beneficial to the Drupal community and provide monetary value to the business that owns, promotes and supports it? Whoever figures that out will be a true rockstar in the Drupal community.

SACRED ARTEFACT: Year 7 students Jordan Prenner and Michael Aiavao get a close look at the holy relic of St Francis Xavier. Rob Williams

ST FRANCIS Xavier Catholic Church in Goodna has housed a holy relic on a rare tour away from its historic home.

The relic, the right forearm of St Francis Xavier, began its tour of Australia in Sydney on September 16 and will return to Sydney before its return to Rome on December 4.

It arrived in Goodna at 2pm yesterday and is scheduled to leave at 9am today.

The significance of the relic is it is the arm with which St Francis Xavier baptised and blessed people and held the hands of the sick and dying.

Yesterday, at the church named in his honour, schoolchildren, teachers and parents gazed at the relic in wonder and awe.

They filed up to the front of the church in pairs to look at the relic.

It is contained in a sealed plexiglass box surrounded by Australian timber.

Father Richard Shortall, who is travelling with the relic, said that after St Francis Xavier died on an island off the south coast of China, the Jesuits on Malacca decided to retrieve his body.

In 1614, Fr Shortall said, the Jesuits in Rome decided they wanted part of his body to go on display.

"It is a huge joy to bring the relic to a church named after St Francis Xavier," Fr Shortall said.

George Hartnett Funerals arranged transport during the relic's visit to the Archdiocese of Brisbane.

    Saintly legacy

    • St Francis Xavier (1506-1552) was co-founder of the Jesuit Order and patron saint of Australia until 1976 when Australia ceased to be categorised as a mission country.
    • His statue is in many Catholic churches and there are two cathedrals named after him.
    • It is very rare for the relic of St Francis Xavier to leave Rome.
