Report shows Nokia clearly dominates Windows Phone market share

I just read the latest AdDuplex Windows Phone report that contains findings collected from 294 Windows Phone apps and have to say that I am not surprised at all that results show the Nokia clearly dominates the Windows Phone market. Check out the report with some detailed pie charts showing the different pieces of market share.

Results from this data show that Windows Phone 7 still dominates Windows Phone 8, 75 percent to 26 percent. Nokia may have something like 78 percent, HTC nearly 14 percent, Samsung 6 percent and the rest totaling about 2 percent. I think HTC's share is likely higher when comparing Windows Phone 8 only, but Nokia did well with Windows Phone 7 with their fresh new products while others just put Windows Phone into Android bodies. Samsung hasn't really joined the Windows Phone 8 party in the US and their 6 percent share is no surprise.

You may recall that I had a tough time deciding between the Lumia 920 and HTC 8X, but in the end I purchased a red Nokia Lumia 920. The OIS camera, wireless charging, and huge assortment of Nokia apps and services made it pretty clear the Lumia 920 was the best choice and I have been quite happy with my selection.

(AP) ? Viktor Fasth made two stops in the shootout to remain perfect in six starts and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Tuesday night in a matchup of the top two teams in the Western Conference.

After Jonathan Toews converted the first shootout attempt for Chicago, Fasth stopped Patrick Kane's backhander and denied Brandon Saad on the right side of the goal to become the first goalie to win his first six NHL starts since Dan Ellis with Dallas and Nashville from Feb. 18, 2004, to Nov. 29, 2007.

Nick Bonino and Corey Perry scored in the tiebreaker for Anaheim, which improved to 3-1 on its season-high, six-game road trip. Ryan Getzlaf and Andrew Cogliano scored in regulation.

Brandon Saad and Nick Leddy had the goals for Chicago, which remained the only NHL team without a regulation loss. Corey Crawford made 29 saves in the first home game for the Blackhawks in two weeks.

Chicago was in front 2-1 before Cogliano sent a deflected shot into the left side of the net with 2:40 left in the third after he had his helmet knocked off. It was the second goal in the last two games for Cogliano, and his second on the year.

The Blackhawks were on the power play for almost four minutes in overtime but couldn't get the winning goal. Fasth made a nice stop on Patrick Sharp's slap shot and a glove save on Marian Hossa to send it to the shootout.

Getzlaf put the Ducks in front with a power-play goal in the second, but the momentum shifted after Chicago forward Bryan Bickell leveled Getzlaf midway through the period. Brad Staubitz immediately jumped on Bickell to defend his teammate. He got a few punches in before Bickell took him to the ice, and the Blackhawks quickly jumped on Fasth for a pair of goals in their first home game since a 2-1 victory over Detroit on Jan. 27.

With Staubitz in the box serving an instigating penalty, Leddy sent a slap shot off the right post and into the goal for his second of the season at 10:17.

Saad then came down and sent a leaping wrister toward Fasth as he was going to the ice. The puck went off Fasth's left shoulder and started trickling down his back. Luca Sbisa went to the ice to try to stop it from crossing the line as players both teams flocked into the goalmouth.

After a lengthy replay review, the officials announced the puck had crossed the line before the goal was knocked off its posts. As the Blackhawks celebrated Saad's second of the year, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau listened to an explanation from the referees.

It looked as if that goal would be the difference until Cogliano tied it up in the third. He also scored in Anaheim's 6-5 shootout win at St. Louis on Saturday.

NOTES: F Daniel Carcillo skated again Tuesday morning, and coach Joel Quenneville said he might able to practice with the Blackhawks this week. Carcillo hasn't played since he injured his right knee in the season opener against the Kings ... Ducks G Jonas Hiller also skated Tuesday and remains day to day with a lower-body injury. ... Chicago won three of four meetings with Anaheim last season, including both games at home.

Mobile and Social: A Marketing Marriage Made in Heaven

Apparently the stars have come into alignment. Or perhaps Hell has frozen over. Whatever the cause, for the first time ever, more Facebook users are accessing the site on mobile devices than on desktops. Not only that, Facebook is actually generating revenue from mobile ads. Perhaps mobile is not just a fad after all. Hmmmm. Time to rethink that marketing strategy, maybe even upgrade the corporate website. Smart thinking and here?s why: Location-based, real time information is no longer a novelty. It has become the norm. Where do people need that information? On their mobile devices. When do they want that information? Now. Who do they want to share it with? Their social network: friends, family, coworkers, even strangers.

What is Mobile Marketing?

Mobile marketing is getting a lot of press lately. Even though the very term ?mobile marketing? has become a bit ubiquitous, there is still some confusion as to what mobile marketing actually is. That is because there are actually two different definitions of the term. According to Wikipedia, ?Mobile marketing is marketing on or with a mobile device, such as a cell phone?. It is also defined as ?The use of the mobile medium as a means of marketing communication?. So, in addition to being marketing messages viewed on the small or ?third? screen, the first two being the television and the computer monitor, it is also marketing that it specifically geared toward mobile devices. The first case would be a website as it is rendered on a cell phone or tablet, the second would be SMS messages and push ads. Clearly, it is the medium AND the message.

Mobile and Social

While social media was the buzz word for 2012, this year it is mobile marketing?and rightly so. However, it is important to recognize that there really is no social without mobile, nor mobile without social. In fact, many social networks are mobile-only platforms. For instance, Instagram, Facebook?s recently acquired photo-sharing application and Twitter?s new love-child, Vine, for micro-video sharing. Both were designed as mobile-only apps. Those two examples highlight the synergistic relationship between social and mobile. Another great example is the Super Bowl. Many of the brands incorporating mobile into their marketing message used social media as the catalyst. Kraft demonstrated the marriage of social and mobile deliciously with their Oreo brand. Their Super Bowl ad ended with a call to action: vote for your favorite, the cookie or the creme, on Instagram. In another commercial, automotive brand Lincoln and comic Jimmy Fallon used a Twitter hashtag to create a 90 second spot optimized for mobile viewing. We are seeing that social media play a crucial role in the success of mobile advertising. Many advertisers are successfully using social media to prompt consumers to use their mobile devices as the starting point to learn more about a brand or product.

The take-away: Social has gone mobile. Mobile needs social for ultimate success. Be kind to your marketing effort. While you are busy building up your social presence, don?t forget to make sure your efforts are mobile-friendly. Right now, mobile and social are in the honeymoon phase. Both are happy, basking in the sun, but remember what your parents told you. Marriage is hard work. Part of that work is making sure your website is mobile responsive, getting rid of any flash-based content and adding prominent social sharing buttons that people can actually click.

Sony likely to unveil next PlayStation on Feb. 20

(AP) ? Sony is poised to unveil the next PlayStation game console on Feb. 20, a date that would give the Japanese electronics company a head start over Microsoft's expected announcement of an Xbox 360 successor in June.

Sony Corp. invited journalists to an evening press event in New York City. The company has not said what it plans to show off, but signs indicate that it'll be the PlayStation 4. Sony would only say that it "will deliver and speak about the future PlayStation business."

Such a console would follow Nintendo's Wii U, which launched last fall, and precede Microsoft Corp.'s next Xbox game console, which will likely be unveiled in June at the E3 video game conference in Los Angeles.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said it's a "super smart" move for Sony to pre-empt Microsoft. This way, the PlayStation 4 will get the spotlight without much competition.

The currently available PlayStation 3 went on sale in 2006, a year after the Xbox 360. But Xbox 360 has been more popular, largely because of its robust online service, Xbox Live, which allows people to play games with others online. The Wii is still the top seller among the three consoles, though it has lost momentum in recent years.

The Wii U was the first of the newest generation of video game consoles to launch, but sales so far have been disappointing. Nintendo Co.'s president, Satoru Iwata, acknowledged recently that the Wii U and the handheld Nintendo 3Ds didn't do well over the holidays, but he ruled out a price cut for the new console.

All three console makers are trying to position their devices as entertainment hubs that go beyond games as they try to stay relevant in the age of smartphones and tablet computers. Such hubs can deliver TV shows, movies and music. The Wii U has a TV-watching feature called TVii. With it, the console's touch-screen GamePad controller becomes a remote control for your TV and set-top box. TVii groups your favorite shows and sports events together, whether it's on live TV or an Internet video service such as Hulu Plus. And it offers water-cooler moments you can chat about on social media.

Missing NYC mom found dead in Turkey

Sarai Sierra, 33, who traveled from Staten Island to Turkey on Jan. 7, disappeared on Jan. 21, the day she was supposed to travel home. Police found her body in Istanbul Saturday night and are reportedly questioning 15 people in her death. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By Richard Engel, Chief Foreign Correspondent, NBC News

A New York City mom who went missing while visiting Turkey was killed by a blunt trauma wound to the head, Turkish officials said early Sunday.

The body of Sarai Sierra, 33, who had been missing for almost two weeks, was found Saturday evening dumped against ramparts of an ancient city wall, police said.

Police are reportedly questioning 15 people over her killing.

Mother-of-two Sierra, from Staten Island, had not been in contact with her family since Jan. 21, the day before she was supposed to fly home after a two-week vacation - her first overseas trip.

What happened in the days in which she was missing is not clear, police said.

Her husband, Steven, identified her body late on Saturday at an Istanbul morgue, state broadcaster TRT reported.

Sierra left for Turkey on Jan. 7 ? alone, because a friend had dropped out of the trip. She wanted to pursue her photography hobby. An Instagram account she set up over the summer, with images of scenes around New York City, had developed a strong following. ?

During her two-week trip abroad, Sierra also visited the Netherlands and Munich, Germany, according to the AP.

Police briefly detained a man last week who exchanged messages with Sierra online. The man had contacted her and made plans to meet with her on a bridge she wanted to photograph, according to Hurriyet. The bridge was a short distance from where Sierra's body was found.

The man was released after being questioned. It was unclear whether he was among the those arrested after the body was found.

Speaking earlier, Steven Sierra said Sarai stayed in close touch with him and their children, ages 9 and 11, by phone and by Skype. After she didn?t arrive at the airport as planned, he and his brother-in-law David Jimenez traveled to Turkey to look for her.?

Isolde Raftery, Staff Writer, NBC News, contributed to this report.

Maria Menounos' favorite diet tip

Girl Crush:?Maria Menounos

Can hot water help you
lose weight?

Want to learn a diet secret that Maria Menounos relies on to stay in shape? Our favorite Extra host and Girl Crush for February says her key to keeping that "awe-mazing" figure isn?t brutal dieting or workout regimes. It?s simply drinking hot water.

Heat up and drink up

Hot water with lemon

We?ve all been told to drink eight cups of water a day, but Menounos doesn?t just drink bottled water out of the fridge. She heats it up first and then imbibes. The practice of drinking warm or hot water has roots in Ayurveda, the ancient science of health and medicine. Many people add lemon or lime to the water to give it flavor as well as a nutrition boost. The warm or hot water is thought to boost digestive power, reduce metabolic waste, relieve heartburn, ease cold symptoms, detox the body ? and it can help you shed pounds, too.

Note: Menounos? practice is also known as ushnodaka therapy. Yogis believe that the stronger your ?digestive fire? is, the stronger your skin, immune system, and mental and physical stamina will be. Namaste, for sure.

DIY hot water

Before you go and zap a mug of water in the microwave (which we don?t recommend since pure water can explode), get the most out of your hot-water experience with these tips. Heat up purified, fluoride-free or spring water in a kettle and squeeze half of a lemon or lime into the glass. Some people also boil water the night before so it is at room temperature when they wake up; then it?s ready to consume. According to NaturalNews.com, you should drink the cup of water on an empty stomach and ideally wait about an hour before eating.

Benefits of drinking hot water

According to YogaJournal.com, the warm water stimulates the gastrointestinal tract and peristalsis, which is contraction of the muscles in the intestinal walls that keep things moving along. Lemons and limes are high in minerals and vitamins, and they aid in loosening what yogis call ama, or toxins, in your digestive tract. Another benefit of drinking hot water is that it makes your stomach feel full and can keep you from overeating.

Does it really work?

While drinking hot water alone won?t miraculously make you lose weight, it can help you replace high-calorie drinks, which will promote weight loss. Warm water may also be a more enticing way to stay hydrated, especially in the winter, when cold liquids lose their appeal.

Try it and see. If it works for Menounos, it may just work for you, too.

Obama offers faith groups new birth control rule

FILE - In this May 15, 2012 file photo, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius speaks in Bethesda, Md. The legal challenges over religious freedom and the birth control coverage requirement in President Barack Obama?s health care overhaul appear to be moving toward the U.S. Supreme Court. Dozens of lawsuits have been filed by faith-affiliated charities, hospitals and universities, against the mandate which requires employers to provide insurance that covers contraception for free. However, many for-profit business owners are also suing, claiming a violation of their religious beliefs. (AP) ? Facing a wave of lawsuits over what government can tell religious groups to do, the Obama administration on Friday proposed a compromise for faith-based nonprofits that object to covering birth control in their employee health plans.

Some of the lawsuits appear headed for the Supreme Court, threatening another divisive legal battle over President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law, which requires most employers to cover birth control free of charge to female workers as a preventive service. The law exempted churches and other houses of worship, but religious charities, universities, hospitals and even some for-profit businesses have objected.

The government's new offer, in a proposed regulation, has two parts.

Administration officials said it would more simply define the religious organizations that are exempt from the requirement altogether. For example, a mosque whose food pantry serves the whole community would not have to comply.

For other religious employers, the proposal attempts to create a buffer between them and contraception coverage. Female employees would still have free access through insurers or a third party, but the employer would not have to arrange for the coverage or pay for it. Insurers would be reimbursed for any costs by a credit against fees owed the government.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the plan would satisfy the objections of Roman Catholic charities and other faith-affiliated nonprofits nationwide challenging the requirement.

Neither the Catholic Health Association, a trade group for hospitals, nor the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops had an immediate reaction, saying the regulations were still being studied.

But the National Association of Evangelicals, which represents about 40 denominations and works with the administration on immigration and other issues, quickly rejected the rule. It said the change didn't create enough of a buffer between faith groups and birth control coverage.

"The Obama administration should have done the right thing and dropped the contraception mandate, or at least should have exempted all religious organizations," said Leith Anderson, the association's president.

Kyle Duncan, general counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which is representing religious nonprofits and businesses in lawsuits, said many of his clients will still have serious concerns.

"This is a moral decision for them," Duncan said. "Why doesn't the government just exempt them?"

Some women's advocates were pleased.

"The important thing for us is that women employees can count on getting insurance that meets their needs, even if they're working for a religiously affiliated employer," said Cindy Pearson, executive director of the National Women's Health Network.

Policy analyst Sarah Lipton-Lubet of the American Civil Liberties Union said the rule appeared to meet the ACLU's goal of providing "seamless coverage."

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement that the compromise would provide "women across the nation with coverage of recommended preventive care at no cost, while respecting religious concerns."

The birth-control rule, first introduced a year ago, became an election issue, with some advocates for women praising the mandate as a victory but some religious leaders decrying it as an attack on faith groups.

The health care law requires most employers, including faith-affiliated hospitals and nonprofits, to provide preventive care at no charge to employees. Scientific advisers to the government recommended that artificial contraception, including sterilization, be included in a group of services for women. The goal, in part, is to help women space out pregnancies to promote health.

Under the original rule, only those religious groups that primarily employ and serve people of their own faith ? such as churches ? were exempt. But other religiously affiliated groups, such as church-affiliated universities, Catholic Charities and hospitals, were told they had to comply.

Catholic bishops, evangelicals and some religious leaders who have generally been supportive of Obama's policies lobbied fiercely for a broader exemption. The Catholic Church prohibits the use of artificial contraception. Evangelicals generally accept the use of birth control, but some object to specific methods such as the morning-after contraceptive pill, which they argue is tantamount to abortion, and is covered by the policy.

Obama had promised to change the birth control requirement so insurance companies ? and not faith-affiliated employers ? would pay for the coverage, but religious leaders said more changes were needed to make the plan work.

Since then, more than 40 lawsuits have been filed by religious nonprofits and secular for-profit businesses contending the mandate violates their religious beliefs. As expected, this latest regulation does not provide any accommodation for individual business owners who have religious objections to the rule.

Questions remain about how the services ultimately will be funded. The Health and Human Services Department has not tallied an overall cost for the plan, according to Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, an HHS deputy policy director.

However, in its new version of the rule, the department argues that the change won't impose new costs on insurers because it will save them money "from improvements in women's health and fewer child births."

The latest version of the mandate is now subject to a 60-day public comment period. The overall mandate is to take effect for religious nonprofits in August.
