The Rise of the Financial Downturn: Contributing Factors ...

Guest post from personal injury lawyers.

While most businesses are hit hard by the economic crisis, the claims market actually thrives during a financial downturn. Although many experts grumble about the compensation culture, statistics show that economic booms correlate with fewer personal injury claims. So why are people calling up their lawyers so readily during a recession?

Redundancies

With more than 1.3 million people losing their jobs by 2010, due to the economic downturn, and employment opportunities few and far between, those who?d been made redundant seemed more likely to file a claim. Why?

While under employment, staff can be concerned about losing their job, if they make a personal injury claim. Even though this rarely happens ? and if it did, you could take your employers to court over unfair dismissal ? employees seem to be hesitant about collecting compensation. However, when made redundant, there?s no loyalty left to the business, and people seem to be more comfortable about making a claim.

There?s also a large window of opportunity to contact a solicitor, as you can make your claim up to three years after the incident occurred. With increasing numbers of people fired or made redundant, the personal injury claim figures have likewise grown.

Business Negligence

Homes and corporations alike are suffering from severe expenditure cutbacks. Businesses are having to make-do with spartan levels of staff and resources.

With employees rushed off their feet, quality of service can be jeopardised, such as in the NHS, where nurses are thin on the ground due to ?reforms? ? medical negligence can then occur, purely because the staff-to-patient ratio is inequitable, leading to an increased amount of complaints.

Health and safety, as well as training, can be affected, and stress levels can go through the roof, leading to medical problems.

Rise Of the ?No Win No Fee?

From personal injury claims in Liverpool to medical negligence complaints in London, ?no win no fee? solicitors are making it easier than ever to file a personal injury claim. With court fees being what they are, the claimant now has the security of knowing that they?ll only have to pay-up, if they win their case. Equally, solicitors are likely to give it their all, as the only way that their company makes a profit is if they win!

Poor Financial Situation

Thanks to the recession, most UK citizens are in a worse financial position than before. When your bank balance is in dire straits, making a claim will be more attractive, if that means you can lift your family above the bread line or afford a much-needed holiday. In a pinch, the possibility of money is a compelling incentive to contact a solicitor.

Also, a drop in disposable income will mean that individuals will choose cheaper services, such as home improvements that could go awry. Although low-end contracting doesn?t necessarily mean substandard work, you may find yourself injured after an inexpensive workman does a poor quality job on your house.

Composed by Hughes Carlisle personal injury solicitors in Liverpool who are reflecting on economy changes and the role we as a nation have helping improve the claiming situation.

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) ? A former U.S.-backed dictator who presided over one of the bloodiest periods of Guatemala's civil war will stand trial on charges he ordered the murder, torture and displacement of thousands of Mayan Indians, a judge ruled Monday.

Human rights advocates have said that the prosecution of Jose Efrain Rios Montt would be an important symbolic victory for the victims of one of the most horrific of the conflicts that devastated Central America during the last decades of the Cold War.

He is the first former president to be charged with genocide by a Latin American court.

"It's the beginning of a new phase of this struggle," said Paul Seils, vice president of the New York-based International Center for Transitional Justice, which has worked extensively on war-crimes cases in Guatemala. He said the decision was "a good step forward" but he expected the prosecution of Rios Mont to encounter stiff resistance from forces in Guatemala opposed to the punishment of government-allied forces for their actions during the civil war.

Others hailed the judge's ruling as a less-qualified victory for justice in Guatemala.

"The fact that a judge has ordered the trial of a former head of state is a remarkable development in a country where impunity for past atrocities has long been the norm," said Jose Miguel Vivanco, Americas director at Human Rights Watch.

Guatemala's leaders have been criticized for years for their inability or unwillingness to prosecute government forces and allied paramilitaries accused of marching into Mayan villages, carrying out rapes and torture, and slaughtering women, children and unarmed men in a "scorched earth" campaign aimed at eliminating the support for a left-wing guerrilla movement.

Despite a series of international inquiries finding him responsible for war crimes, Rios Montt served as a Guatemalan congressman for 15 years until he lost a re-election race late last year. He had held immunity from prosecution while a member of Congress and was put under house arrest after losing his post.

One of the highest priorities of the president who won last year's election, Otto Perez Molina, has been campaigning for the elimination of a U.S. ban on military aid to Guatemala, which is locked in a fight against heavily armed drug cartels that have taken over swathes of the country.

Among the conditions set by the U.S. Congress for restoring the aid is reforming Guatemala's justice system and putting an end to impunity.

The decision to try Rios Montt could stand as a precedent in the cases of dozens of other lower-ranking military men accused of participating in atrocities, victims' advocates have said.

Judge Miguel Angel Galvez ruled that Rios Montt could be tried on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity for the killing of 1,771 indigenous Ixiles in 1982 and 1983, when he was president.

The decision clears the way for a three-judge panel to hear the evidence against Rios Montt and decide to either judge him guilty and sentence him, exonerate him of the charge or start a public trial.

Prosecutors allege that after leading a March 1982 coup and seizing control of the government, Rios Montt oversaw torture, rape, forced disappearances and forced relocations and killings of thousands of Ixil people by soldiers, paramilitaries and other government officials.

His lawyers have sought to block the trial, arguing that he is protected by an amnesty law.

The attorney-general's office said that it found evidence of 5,271 killings of Ixil residents of the towns of San Juan Cotzal, Santa Maria Nebai and San Gaspar Chajul in the department of Quiche. Prosecutors said 1,771 died in some 15 massacres between 1982 and 1983, and 370 bodies have been identified.

Prosecutor Orlando Lopez said during hearings before Monday's decision that Rios Montt wanted to wipe out the Ixil people, considered a bastion of support for guerrilla fighters waging a civil war against the Guatemalan state.

"During the period in which you held office, it is believed that the actions carried by members of the Guatemalan Army, military official and civil defense patrolmen resulted in the deaths of 1,771 people," the complaint against Rios Montt reads.

The prosecution case includes forensic reports documenting hundreds of deaths.

Among the testimony presented to the judge was that of Ana Lopez, an Ixil woman taken from her home by soldiers in May, 1982 to a government outpost where she was tortured and raped for 10 days.

During the 1960-96 civil war, more than 200,000 people, mostly Mayan Indians, were killed or went missing and entire villages were exterminated, according to the United Nations.

Hey, alien hunters: NASA's alien planet archive is open for business

"The entire world can help us" find exoplanets (alien planets), says a Kepler scientist. NASA is throwing open its list of possible exoplanets to anyone who wants to look.

By Miriam Kramer,?Space.com / January 22, 2013

This artist's conception depicts the Kepler-10 star system, located about 560 light-years away, near the Cygnus and Lyra constellations. Kepler has discovered two planets around this star. Kepler-10b, the dark spot against the yellow sun, is (so far!) the smallest known rocky exoplanet, or planet outside our solar system.

Scientists with NASA's planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft have revamped the mission's online archive of alien worlds, opening up the database for the entire world to see.

Researchers are now posting all exoplanet sightings by the Kepler observatory into a single, comprehensive website called the "NASA Exoplanet Archive." Instead of going through the long planet confirmation process before making data publicly available, since December of last year, scientists have started shoveling out all the data Kepler collects into a comprehensive list.

"When we make that list, right away it goes to the archive," Kepler mission team member Steve Howell told SPACE.com during the 221st American Astronomical Society meeting in Long Beach, Calif., this month. "So the day we know about the list, the archive knows about the list. And then everybody, including us, can work on that list. But that list is dynamic so if we, or a community person, makes an observation and says, 'Hey, I looked at this planet candidate but it's really an eclipsing binary,' then that entry in the archive will be changed."

The archive has information about the size, orbital period and other metrics of any possible planet discovered and investigated by Kepler.

"It's all in real time," Howell said. "The sausage-making process is exposed."

Before the new archive was debuted, astronomers were already doing creative work with the data. One created a visually stunning video of every known Kepler planet candidate ? 2,299 unconfirmed exoplanets at the time ? orbiting one central point.

The Kepler team?s new "open" attitude toward data release is giving everybody, not just members of the scientific community, a chance to do some hands-on scientific research by building their own experiments, Howell said.

A group of high school students has already taken data from groups of planets observed by Kepler and mapped them against a map of known stars looking for a pattern. Howell doesn?t think they'll see much, but he's glad that they have the opportunity to get creative.

"The entire world can help us with this Kepler data," Howell said. "I don't see any downside."

?Planet Hunters, a collective of amateur astronomers, recently found 42 new alien planets using Kepler data that was publicly available prior to the launch of the new archive system.

It would be difficult for Kepler scientists to get their jobs done without the help of amateur astronomers around the globe, mission researchers said. By making the exoplanet archive more accessible, it could mean that more planets are found and confirmed in shorter amounts of time than ever before.

More people sifting through the wealth of data collected by Kepler means that scientists have a better chance of finding even more planets circling distant stars, Howell added.

Since its launch in 2009, NASA's Kepler spacecraft has flagged more than 2,300 objects as possible alien worlds. Although only about 100 have been confirmed, scientists expect that at least 80 percent could be certifiable exoplanets.

Currently, Kepler has entered a "safe mode" after researchers spotted an issue with one of the spacecraft's three reaction wheels that are responsible for orienting the telescope. The malfunction has stalled science observations, but researchers hope that the issue will be resolved by Sunday (Jan. 27).

Congratulations, you survived the Mayan apocalypse. I knew you could do it.

I had complete confidence that I would live past the alleged planetary expiration date of December 21, 2012, provided I didn't get hit by a bus or slip in the bathtub. But those modes of demise are, of course, far less tantalizing than some end-of-the world fantasy dreamed up by amateur archaeologists and sucked down by people who perhaps never worry that they have undiagnosed hypertension or that the highway bridge they cross daily hasn't been properly maintained.

BES 10 now available for everyone who manages iOS and BlackBerry in Enterprise

BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 is now available for download, and in recognition of the BYOD -- bring your own device -- trend spearheaded by iPhones and iPads, BES 10 will let you manage Apple devices as well.

BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 gives organizations a highly scalable solution and the flexibility to manage their mobile deployment as needed. It supports both corporate-owned and personal-owned (BYOD - Bring Your Own Device) device deployments and mixed environments of BlackBerry and other devices, providing mobile device management, mobile application management, and secure access to corporate data. It includes an intuitive, unified, web-based administration console to manage devices and users. It also supports BlackBerry Balance technology, which elegantly separates and secures work applications and data from personal content on BlackBerry devices. BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 is built on the same security and connectivity model for BlackBerry 10 smartphones that enterprise customers have always trusted and relied upon with BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

There's a free 60 day trial available. Of course, enterprises aren't usually quick to update their server software, so it's hard to say how long it will take for BES 10 to gain significant penetration and traction, but if you're company is deploying it, let me know how it goes, how it works, and how you like it.

Meanwhile head on over to CrackBerry.com for everything you need to know about BlackBerry 10.

Brain structure of infants predicts language skills at one year

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Using a brain-imaging technique that examines the entire infant brain, researchers have found that the anatomy of certain brain areas ? the hippocampus and cerebellum ? can predict children's language abilities at 1 year of age.

The University of Washington study is the first to associate these brain structures with future language skills. The results are published in the January issue of the journal Brain and Language.

"The brain of the baby holds an infinite number of secrets just waiting to be uncovered, and these discoveries will show us why infants learn languages like sponges, far surpassing our skills as adults," said co-author Patricia Kuhl, co-director of the UW's Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences.

Children's language skills soar after they reach their first birthdays, but little is known about how infants' early brain development seeds that path. Identifying which brain areas are related to early language learning could provide a first glimpse of development going awry, allowing for treatments to begin earlier.

"Infancy may be the most important phase of postnatal brain development in humans," said Dilara Deniz Can, lead author and a UW postdoctoral researcher. "Our results showing brain structures linked to later language ability in typically developing infants is a first step toward examining links to brain and behavior in young children with linguistic, psychological and social delays."

In the study, the researchers used magnetic resonance imaging to measure the brain structure of a mix of 19 boys and girls at 7 months of age. The researchers used a measurement called voxel-based morphometry to determine the concentration of gray matter, consisting of nerve cells, and of white matter, which make up the network of connections throughout the brain.

The study is the first to relate the outcomes of this whole-brain imaging technique to predict future ability in infants. The whole-brain approach freed the researchers from having to select a few brain regions for study ahead of time, ones scientists might have expected to be involved based on adult data.

Five months later, when the children were about 1 year old they returned to the lab for a language test. This test included measures of the children's babbling, recognition of familiar names and words, and their ability to produce different types of sounds.

"At this age, children typically don't say many words," Deniz Can said. "So we rely on babbling and the ability to comprehend language as a sign of early language mastery."

Infants with a greater concentration of gray and white matter in the cerebellum and the hippocampus showed greater language ability at age 1. This is the first study to identify a relationship between language and the cerebellum and hippocampus in infants. Neither brain area is well-known for its role in language: the cerebellum is typically linked to motor learning, while the hippocampus is commonly recognized as a memory processor.

"Looking at the whole brain produced a surprising result and scientists live for surprises. It wasn't the language areas of the infant brain that predicted their future linguistic skills, but instead brain areas linked to motor abilities and memory processing," Kuhl said. "Infants have to listen and memorize the sound patterns used by the people in their culture, and then coax their own mouths and tongues to make these sounds in order join the social conversation and get a response from their parents."

The findings could reflect infants' abilities to master the motor planning for speech and to develop the memory requirements for keeping the sound patterns in mind.

"The brain uses many general skills to learn language," Kuhl said. "Knowing which brain regions are linked to this early learning could help identify children with developmental disabilities and provide them with early interventions that will steer them back toward a typical developmental path."

Todd Richards, a UW professor of radiology, was another co-author. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Santa Fe Institute Consortium.

Inside job, 2 Canadian militants in Algeria siege

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) ? The hostage-taking at a remote Algerian gas plant was carried out by 30 militants from across the northern swath of Africa and two from Canada, authorities said. The militants, who wore military uniforms and knew the layout, included explosives experts who rigged it with bombs and a leader whose final order was to kill all the captives.

The operation also had help with inside knowledge ? a former driver at the plant, Algeria's prime minister said Monday.

In all, 38 workers and 29 militants died, the Algerian prime minister said Monday, offering the government's first detailed account of four days of chaos that ended with a bloody military raid he defended as the only way possible to end the standoff. Five foreigners are still missing.

"You may have heard the last words of the terrorist chief," Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal told reporters. "He gave the order for all the foreigners to be killed, so there was a mass execution, many hostages were killed by a bullet to the head."

Monday's account offered the first Algerian government narrative of the standoff, from the moment of the attempted bus hijacking on Wednesday to the moment when the attackers prepared Saturday to detonate bombs across the sprawling complex. That's when Algerian special forces moved in for the second and final time.

All but one of the dead victims ? an Algerian security guard ? were foreigners. The dead hostages included seven Japanese workers, six Filipinos, three energy workers each from the U.S. and Britain, two from Romania and one worker from France.

The prime minister said three attackers were captured but did not specify their nationalities or their conditions or say where they were being held.

He said the Islamists included a former driver at the complex from Niger and that the militants "knew the facility's layout by heart." The vast complex is deep in the Sahara, 800 miles (1,300 miles) south of Algiers, with a network of roads and walkways for the hundreds of workers who keep it running.

The attackers wore military uniforms, according to state television, bolstering similar accounts by former hostages that the attackers didn't just shoot their way in.

"Our attention was drawn by a car. It was at the gate heading toward the production facility. Four attackers stepped out of a car that had flashing lights on top of it," one of the former hostages, Liviu Floria, a 45-year-old mechanic from Romania, told The Associated Press.

The militants had said during the standoff that their band included people from Canada, and hostages who had escaped recalled hearing at least one of the militants speaking English with a North American accent.

The Algerian premier said the Canadians were of Arab descent. He further said the militant cell also included men from Egypt, Mali, Niger, Mauritania and Tunisia, as well as three Algerians. Officials in Canada could not confirm that any of the attackers were from there.

"The announcement of the Algerian prime minister is fine, but we need verification. It could be a forged document. We need to confirm," said a Canadian official who was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity.

Three Americans died in the attack and seven made it out safely, a U.S. official in Washington said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly. The bodies have been recovered, the official said.

An earlier report from an Algerian security official that as many as 80 people had died in the assault ? including hostages and attackers ? appears to have overstated the toll, but the official had cautioned that many bodies discovered during a sweep of the facility were badly disfigured, making it difficult to reach a total.

Algeria has not reported any military deaths from four days of confronting the fighters. Algerian authorities are typically reluctant to announce military losses.

The attack began early Wednesday with the attempted hijacking of two buses filled with workers outside the complex. Repelled by Algerian forces, the militants moved on the main complex, armed with missiles, mortars and bombs for their three explosives experts, said Prime Minister Sellal. They split into two groups, with one infiltrating the complex's living quarters and the other the gas plant.

Sellal praised the quick wits of a guard who tripped an alarm that stopped the flow of gas and warned workers of an imminent attack.

"It was thanks to him that the factory was protected," he said.

Floria, the former hostage from Romania, remembered the moment when the power was cut.

"I ran together with other expats and hid under the desks in my office, locking the door. Attackers went scanning the office facility kicking the doors in. Luckily our door did not break and they went on to other offices," he said. "Locals were freed, the attackers made clear from the beginning that only foreigners were a target. Expats were detained."

Ultimately, Floria escaped. But not before he heard the two gunshots that silenced a pair of wounded hostages he said he tried to save.

"The perception of time changes. Seconds become hours. You feel you are losing your mind. I went through this for almost 40 hours," he said.

The prime minister said the heavily armed militants had prepared the attack for two months. He said the attackers arrived from northern Mali and had planned to return there with the foreign hostages. Seven French citizens taken hostage in recent years are thought to be held by al-Qaida linked groups in northern Mali.

Sellal justified the helicopter attack Thursday on vehicles filled with hostages out of the fear the kidnappers were attempting to escape.

In a statement, the Masked Brigade, the group that claimed to have masterminded the takeover, has warned of more such attacks against any country backing military intervention in neighboring Mali, where the French are trying to stop an advance by Islamic extremists. Algeria, despite its government's reservations about the French decision, is allowing French jets to overfly.

Col. Thierry Burkhard, the French military spokesman, said he did not know if militants in Mali were aware of the events in Algeria.

"However, I'm convinced the terrorist groups in the field have radios, so there's a strong chance that they're not only up to date with what's happening in Algeria but they're listening to everything that Western journalists are saying about the deployment of different forces in the field," he said.

The militants' operation was led by an Algerian, Amine Benchenab, who was known to security services and was killed during the assault, Burkhard added.

Moktar Belmoktar, who is believed to have orchestrated the attack, said in a statement over the weekend that the Algerian site was chosen after the country opened its airspace.

Sellal said negotiating was essentially impossible.

"Their goal was to kidnap foreigners," he said. "They wanted to flee to Mali with the foreigners, but once they were surrounded they started killing the first hostages."

He said the assault by Algerian special forces on the plant on Saturday that killed the last group of militants and hostages came after the kidnappers attempted to destroy the complex: "They led us into a real labyrinth, in negotiations that became unreasonable."

Chernobyl?s Wildlife Survivors

When Mary Mycio tells people she visited the radioactive fallout zone around Chernobyl to study the region?s animals, the questions are always the same. Do the animals have two heads? Do they glow??

Actually, according to Mycio and photographer and field biologist Sergey Gaschak, the animals are thriving. The 1986 explosion, the worst nuclear accident in history, forced 300,000 people to abandon the highly contaminated area around the wreckage of the power plant. Communal farms turned to wetlands and forests, and the animals came back. The area is now the largest, if unintentional, wildlife sanctuary in Europe.

Gaschak has been photographing animals near Chernobyl since 1995. He uses camera traps with motion detectors to capture some of the animals, but he sees and photographs plenty of them in person: lynx, otters, eagle owls, Przewalski?s horses, several species of bats, and footprints of brown bears.

Guys on Girls, Season 2

Lena Dunham and Donald Glover. Lena Dunham and Donald Glover.

David Haglund: Forrest, before Season 2 began you were concerned that Adam Sackler (Adam Driver) might take over Girls in the way that ?Dumbass Homer? has occasionally overwhelmed The Simpsons. This episode concluded with Adam shouting ?I?m craaazy? as he was hauled down a Brooklyn staircase in handcuffs. So: fears realized?

Forrest Wickman: No, not really. I?m less worried now about his character overwhelming the show?though I?m still a little worried about that?than I am about his character?s mental health. Post-Hannah, he seems to be going all K?bler-Ross, from denial (episode 1) to anger (the ?album,? which?was?zany) to bargaining (for a glass of milk). That puts depression up next. Do you think we need to worry about him hurting himself? Or will he continue on living his man-life?

Haglund: He does seem a tad unstable. But I?m not too worried. Also, the ?album? scene was probably one of the top-five funniest scenes Girls has done so far. ?You destroooy my heart. Thanks.?

Wickman: Agree that that scene was amaze. (I also think you and Kois underestimated that term, which is wonderfully stupid.) But do you think that moment, and the Scream-ish moment that followed?he?s texting from inside the house!?fit into the world of the show? Like you guys last week, I?ve found the second season to be funnier so far, but also a bit too broad. (Also a little broad: the basket of puppies.)

Haglund: I bought it. Mostly because Driver can sell almost any dialogue, as far as I can tell. That speech at the end, about ?living his man-life?? Not many actors could pull that off, I don?t think. But when he said that ?to quit this pursuit would be to shirk self-respect and abandon my own manhood,? I went with it completely.

Wickman: Driver?s character has been all over the place so far, and he?s somehow made it all work. But the show itself seems a little unstable. Have you noticed all the continuity errors lately? And the distracting scenery censors that hover around Jemima Kirke?s pregnant belly? (In real life she?s not so shy.)

Haglund: I have not noticed those things. But then, continuity errors don?t generally bother me much. You were also worried before the season that the show wouldn?t be ?as savvy about race as it was about class and gender.? So: fear realized?

Wickman: Not at all! This seemed like the big Episode Where Girls Addresses Its Critics, and I thought it did so pretty well.

Haglund: I thought Donald Glover managed to carry off the plausibility-stretching character of a black Republican who would meet-cute with Hannah Horvath in a Williamsburg coffee shop. And Dunham managed to sell her own questionable bit of dialogue, in which Hannah pretends to have never 1) heard of Missy Elliott or 2) noticed that her new boyfriend was black. It seems highly unlikely that?even in a fit of relationship-ending pique?a twenty-something Oberlin grad would try to pretend that she didn?t ?see? color.

Wickman: That did seem a bit Stephen Colbert of her. But it also got at one of the ways the Obama generation?Hannah?s, and mine?tends to treat race. Which is to pretend it doesn?t exist.

Haglund: Do they treat it that way, really? You would probably know better than I do, since Bill Clinton was still president when I was in college.

Wickman: I?m just speaking from my own experience?in college, especially, where it sometimes seemed like everyone wanted to live in a post-racial world that we?re just not in yet. Maybe that?s nothing new, but I think it may be exaggerated in a generation that emerged by helping to elect the first black president.

And the Missy Elliott reference was a smart way for Dunham to suggest that Hannah was thinking about race, at least subconsciously, even though she wouldn?t admit it. It was exactly the right reference for her character; Hannah would have grown up with that song. I just hope that Glover?and the show?s treatment of race?isn?t a ?One Minute Man.?

Haglund: Another thing Dunham got criticized for during Season 1 was being the product of ?nepotism,? because apparently HBO is always handing out sitcoms to the daughters of acclaimed?New York City artists. So it seemed like another eff you to her critics when her mom, Laurie Simmons, popped up as the owner of a gallery where Marnie (Allison Williams) has applied for a job. Simmons was good in Tiny Furniture, but seemed a little less sure of herself here?though the bit about the teabag was funny. And Williams was great again, nailing that line about her previous employer (?she?s not good at, uh, living?).

Wickman: That was a great line, but I?m still not as taken as you and Kois with the Marnie of Season 2. The weak link has gotten stronger, but she still reads as an actor effortfully playing a character, rather than as a character, full stop. You can see the seams in a way you can?t with, say, Zosia Mamet. (Mamet is a strong argument against the allegations of nepotism. Williams not so much.)

As for Simmons, I didn?t notice that was her, but I thought she was great! If someone?s right for the role, I don?t want Dunham to have to worry about whether they?re a friend or a relative.

Wickman: Do you also agree that Williams? character is still a little bit of a drag? She strikes me as mostly necessary grounding for the show?or to put it another way, a necessary bummer.

Haglund: Hmmm. Not anymore. I thought her exchanges with Elijah (Andrew Rannells) at the door of Hannah?s apartment were hilarious?as was his description of her outfit as that of ?a slutty von Trapp child.?

Wickman: The outfits in this episode in general! What was that zip-up sleeping bag Hannah was wearing? And I wouldn?t complain if more scenes played out in front of Elijah?s rainbow-sorted closet.

Haglund: That?s quite the backdrop. But can we pick this up later? It?s just, I?ve got a meeting, so...

There are many different means of promoting your organization online, but one of the most effective remains the e-mail campaign.

Weighing Your Alternatives

For messages, you have three choices of computer software, each with distinct benefits and drawbacks. You are able to be your own personal machine and install software on your desktop. It is possible to install software on the internet server youre using. Or it is possible to join an ASP managed service.

The obvious good thing about a hosted machine is that getting your e-mails shipped can be your hosts concern. Says Dr. Ralph Wilson, of Wilson Internet Services, With computer or web server software, basically youre responsible to have them delivered Whereas if youre paying somebody else for that company, its their job, and lots of them go on it very seriously. A managed machine starts with a monthly payment for 500 or 1,000 emails and as your email database increases the purchase price creates.

With desktop server application, the greatest benefit could be the cost. You are able to pay a one-time fee for a desktop machine and run it forever. Renting a web server is also relatively cheap.

Beating the Blockers

If you use desktop or server based application, there are a few basic guidelines you can follow to help your messages ensure it is to your visitors inboxes.

1. Avoid symptoms of spam. A number of features that trigger spam filters. Your deliverability can be increased by you by avoiding certain problems in your issue lines:

Dont use all caps.

Dont use HTML messages which can be primarily design.

Dont try to trick filters by replacing characters with asterisks or breaking words up with punctuation marks. Filters are getting wiser, and you could find yourself on a black list.

Dont use careless HTML.

Dont use large or small fonts. Stick to H1, H2, or H3 heading tags.

2. Consider sender accreditation

Bonded sender businesses as and have connections with internet service providers. Reliable organizations may proceed through these companies to obtain secure passage past spam filters. Theres an expense with this service, but its an ideal way to make certain your emails are getting delivered.

What to Try to find in a Hosted Server

There are always a quantity of things you should ask before joining:, if you choose to use a managed service

What steps do they take to prevent spammers from enrolling? An excellent host company may have measures in place, such as for example proved opt-in, to make sure that theyre not allowing spammers to become listed on.

Do they give transformation monitoring? Similar to an ad monitoring program, many published servers now let you see how many of your e-mail users clicked right through to your website, how many click-throughs triggered revenue, and how much money you made from your strategy.

What kind of customer care do they supply? The answer can be often told by you to that question by simply just how long it will take them to respond to your inquiries. Ask if they charge extra for the company and if full phone support is offered by them.

Nevertheless you decide to increase your business, dont overlook the power of email marketing to increase your customer base and improve your sales volume. remove frames

Social media channels- there's more to life than Twitter ? CIMCIG ...

Nick Pauley- MD of Pauley Creative

According to Wikipedia?s non-exhaustive ?List of Social Networking Websites? page there are, at the time of writing, more than two hundred social networking websites in various states of growth and decline.

Now consider this, that?s two hundred social websites with a collective registered community of around five billion registered users. The vast majority of those gazillions will not matter a bit to you or to your business. It?s the rapid growth or user adoption and the subsequent ?potential? reach that can?t be ignored.

?there?s more to life than Twitter

Twitter has reported half a billion users worldwide. Facebook has reached a billion users but according to Forbes their adoption rate is in decline by 1.1% in the US.

Linkedin, a stalwart of B2B social media, has 161 million users and continues growing. Pinterest has 11 million pinners and counting (mostly wives, architects and interior designers) and Instagram has attracted 80 million users. Foursqaure has 20 million users and 60% of them are male. Tumblr- the blogging platform has 12.5 million users generating over half a billion page views per month.

There is even a gaggle of ginormous international social sites that you may not have heard of: Qzone (in China) has around 500 million users.

Badoo and Orkut are popular (collectively reaching over 300 million users) in Europe, India and Latin America. But who cares right? No customers there.

So there IS more to life than Twitter then?

Well, if you roughly add up the numbers on the Wikipedia list, there are 4.5 billion users currently engaged in social networks other than Twitter. Is it fair to say then, that at some point, a small minority of these humans will come into contact with your business, either directly or indirectly from social networking sites other than Twitter? I think it is.

So perhaps the question is ?Which complementary social platforms should I be considering??

Moving forward with growing social adoption

With 86% of companies (Econsultancy report) now employing the services of both Twitter and Facebook, my next question and probably yours too, would be how many of those businesses questioned were indeed from the Construction industry? I suspect not many.

The CMI 2012 survey suggests that the barriers are coming down, especially from the professional service industries within the construction sector. The proportion of companies with a written policy now allowing the use of Twitter amongst Quantity Surveyors, Building Service Engineers and Architects has risen dramatically in the space of year and this trend is matching the phenomenal speed of adoption of social media platforms as marketing tools by mainstream marketers.

How you will get the most out of social platforms

The success lies in research work carried out prior to the media being selected in the first place. For building product manufacturers, which make up the majority of our own clients, Twitter is most often prescribed as an integrated marketing tactic primarily to direct visitors to content and as a customer ?help? tool. It is employed to drive traffic to blogs and resource centres and for picking up opportunities through listening for particular search queries and questions. It?s great for networking and referring contacts and it can be a really effective customer service channel, for being generally helpful.

As with all marketing channels Twitter is measured and reviewed. Its use is tested and refined.

Measure what matters

Using something as cheap and cheerful as Google analytics you can analyse what?s been useful and what?s been not so. The results will more often than not help you decide which platforms to focus on in the future.

The mainstream social platforms are hard to ignore due to their volume of users but don?t overlook the niche platforms, forums and blogging sites before you?ve done your homework. You should have a look at what people are saying about you, you products or your business.

But the ultimate answer is unique to your own business, its goals and target market and as a suggestion you could start by asking yourself three or four good questions.

1. Why do I want to use Social Media?

2. Who am I looking to engage with?

3. What information is going to be relevant?

4. What and how will I measure success?

Bigelow to Build Inflatable Room for the ISS

SpaceX, Boeing, Blue Origin, Sierra Nevada?some of the biggest names in aerospace, newcomers or old guard, are competing to build new spacecraft and rockets to carry astronauts to the International Space Station now that NASA no long flies the space shuttle. But Bigelow Aerospace, founded in 1998, actually wants to add on to the station itself.

The company builds inflatable orbital habitats, more like balloons than the angular metal modules that make up the space station. For years Bigelow has floated the far-out possibility of combining multiple inflatables to create a hotel in space?lodging for space tourists who aren't content to simply see the great beyond from the cabin of a plane. NASA, however, has recently announced it plans to Bigelow's inflatable rooms as add-ons for the ISS.

A SpaceX rocket would carry the first Bigelow Expendable Activity Module (MEAN) to the station in 2015, where it would provide an extra 330 cubic meters of volume to the station, Space.com reports, and could support six astronauts. The BEAM would travel uninflated to the ISS; crews would attach it to an air lock and blow it up with pressurized air from the station. This will be a test mission; NASA hasn't decided how its people will use their new inflatable space.

6 Safety Steps To Making Secure Mobile Transactions - web design ...

Mobile devices and smartphones are still new ideas in the tech community. Compared to home computers and laptops, the common mobile smartphone has only been around for a couple of years now. But having quickly grown to popularity, there are more early adopters now than we have ever seen before.

And this leads into an interesting area of discussion on mobile payments online. More specifically how can you be secure when purchasing things on your mobile devices? I want to offer some tips and ideas for going about purchasing anything on your smartphone or tablet PC. Mobile devices can often be less secure than computers within your own home network.

There is also the possibility of running into bugs in the mobile app or website. Security for mobile phones has been advancing tremendously, but has yet to hit a peak. I will be eagerly watching security trends as they unfold over the next few years. But in the meantime here are some tips you can follow to make sure you are protected when purchasing on a mobile platform.

Download Apps from Trustworthy Sources

We could assume this goes without saying, but obviously this is relatable advice. Downloading 3rd party applications from other areas outside the App Store is a very risky decision.

Alternatives like the Cydia App Store do not have the same credibility as Apple or Google. This is much easier using Android; with iOS devices, they are mostly locked to App Store downloads unless jailbroken. You will have to go through quite a bit of work to get alternative apps installed onto your system. But when in doubt, always check your favorite App Store for a native solution created by the company.

One quick example I can think of is Best Buy. The store does have a mobile website which you can access using your mobile browser of choice. But using it you need to transfer data over the Web via browser inputs. Using a native application you are limited to their backend user interface. This is often a more secure method than accessing websites via Mobile Safari.

So if you are ever in the mood to shop on your phone, check out the App Store first and see if you can locate a native app. These are usually more secure and less buggy than mobile websites. Plus you should still have access to all the major shopping products and categories.

Check App Reviews and Ratings

While inside the App Store you shouldn?t just download the first option you see. There can sometimes be other third-party developers who will create apps tied to online stores yet are not exactly affiliated. This is a rare occurrence, but luckily you can quickly determine where all the high-quality trustworthy applications can be found.

In the listings page you will notice each application has a rating mark. The chart ranges from half star all the way up to five full stars. Along with the actual user rating you can also see how many people have voted, along with some of their reviews. The written content is often much more helpful than a star rating because you can get real human feedback. Don?t be afraid of checking the app reviews before downloading and possibly purchasing items through their software.

Protect your Mobile Devices with Passwords

Some people feel really uncomfortable setting up passwords to lock their phone or tablet. If you are somebody who is forgetful then this may not be a great solution. And of course this will not protect much against somebody snooping over data packets in your Wi-Fi Internet.

However the best protection against somebody gaining access to your accounts from your phone is by using a device password. This means whenever somebody goes to open your iPhone or Android it will require a passcode before unlocking. This is a great solution if you are often out moving around and traveling with your devices.

Accidents do happen and people lose their phones all the time. It would be an even more dangerous situation if your phone had direct access into your bank accounts and online shopping carts. It may be possible to lock specific applications as well, but this may prove more convoluted than useful.

Send Data over a Secure Internet Connection

I cannot stress enough that whenever you are purchasing things or transferring money online, always do this over a secure connection. One of the easiest ways for people to get your password(s) is by accessing your device IP on a public Wi-Fi network.

I can?t speak about the 3G network because I have never looked into how data is passed from device to server. I would imagine it is encrypted in a similar way, but I can say for certain that a 256-bit WEP wi-fi connection would be more secure. I would imagine that any data transfer out of a private network is going to be slightly less guarded, especially with many various devices all accessing the same bandwidth.

Mobile hotspots are not the gathering place for hackers or identity thieves. It just so happens that transferring your personal information over a public Internet connection is just a bad idea. Perhaps risking a login to your Facebook or Twitter is much more realistic. If anyone gains access to your social profiles, you will not be risking the loss of your personal finances & assets!

Check Mobile Websites for HTTPS

I will admit there are some situations where you simply must go through the mobile web interface. When you have no apps to download in the App Store and cannot wait until you have access to a computer then mobile shopping is the way to go.

When you first load up any website in your browser always check for the secure HTTPS connection. This will guarantee that any data passed between your device and the server is only shared between those two machines. You can get into a lot of risky business by sending your personal information over the Internet via unsecured HTTP. Some information is okay, but not credit cards or bank accounts. Definitely double check for that padlock icon before dropping items into your shopping cart.

And in some instances it may honestly be worth waiting until you can get onto a laptop or desktop computer. Many e-commerce websites are not created solely for mobile support. It is always an option, but why not wait and make sure your order is placed correctly?

Watch Statements and Report Suspicious Activity

If you are ever in doubt about your accounts being compromised do not hesitate in taking action. I have preemptively changed my passwords many times over when I feel it?s a good idea. Often times your gut instinct may indeed be correct without having any solid evidence.

Also be sure to log into your online banking accounts every so often and make sure there is no suspicious activity. Check for any money transfers or withdrawals which you didn?t authorize. These situations do not usually happen just solely by using mobile banking. However it doesn?t hurt the situation to be extra cautious when handling your money online.

Mobile Apps Worth Trying

I want to offer a small collection of native mobile applications you could try out related to some popular online vendors. Many of these apps have both Android and iOS support for the majority of smartphone users. The best way to determine quality is to check reviews and see what kind of experiences other users are having.

Some of the applications are related to mobile banking and money payments, while others are e-commerce stores and web shops. Before downloading anything be sure to check the developer and see if they are a trustworthy name. You can match the developer?s name with the company name and figure out the relation between them.

Final Thoughts

I know these are a lot of ideas to consider and they may not apply to everyone. But you really have to spend time planning your own needs for making payments online. As we have illustrated earlier there are plenty of native mobile applications put out by trustworthy companies which you can use from any mobile device.

If your money is safe enough in a digital online account then transferring onto mobile is just a matter of semantics. I do hope this article can offer more than just a few tidbits of knowledge here and there. Security is a topic I am passionate towards and always enjoy hearing related stories. If you have other ideas or questions about making secure mobile payments feel free to share with us in the discussion area.
